that hole covers the pin that holds the shift pin. you might try GENTLY moving the shift lever back and forth and wotking the pin in at the same time, it worked for me on an old old johnson, and is a real and i mean real pain in the ***. BUT you may wanna wait for 1 of the motor gods to speak on this insted of listenin to me, my exp is very limited and i may have just helped to hold the pooch that is being violated! what year is that motor i may have the manual for it. let me know

the shiftin mech is spring loaded. when you took out the screw every thing shifter back under the pressure of the spring. by moving the shoft lever around it should release enuff pressure or add enuff pressure to to almost get it back in place, but it can be done! you just gotta have a lil patience and an extra set of hands to move the shift lever while you watch thru the hole. this proceedure made me wanna poop in my hand and rub it in my hair!

in forward gear, its locked hard and you cant move it.. neutral it moves but not enough, in reverse you can move it but the spring pushes it past the hole.. i dont want to have to drop the lower again.. but i guess if i have to i will.. i had to do it 4 times today anyway trying to get the shifter to work..

Just keep di$%in with it and it will sooner or later go in. I don't know if your old enough but beer and a marlboro helped tremendously! if your not old enuff step away have a pepsi and a shredded combo burrito then go back at it

Aw man, Stinky is right. Been there done that, luckily got it back in. 2 guys might help. With the other guy moving the shifter, you can sit there and when any bit of the holes line stick something in and try it. Its just as Stinky said, a PITA but if you work with it I think youll get it.

I know of NO tricks to help on this one other than having nerves or patience of steel.

well i can get it, but no shifting.. it wont shift at all. it may be because the gears are dry, but i dont want to fill it with oil and then have to take it right back out because somethings not right
