I have a graphite 7' Diawa Regal that's going on 25 years and a Berkley that's at least 15. I haven't noticed them loosing much, if anything. Still can't resist the urge to upgrade them, though...

Well after working all day and coming back to you guys, I can see my partners in crime did an excellent job of parlaying valuable information on this subject. Truthfully speaking, I seriously doubt there will ever be a uniform standard of measure for rods. By now you should be able to start realizing the number of factors that come into play in the composite world. Rod Blank makers do not use a "uniform" fiber application in rod building. Some use filament winding, others use prepreg fabrics rolled around the mandrel core, still others use a technique similar to filament winding called tape layup. Even the resins very and so do the material compositions (boron, carbon, kevlar and glass, to mention a few). The existing weights and actions that are applied to each blank are really only a guess because of the variables. For the same reasons the article that WaffleJaw shared with us, those ratings tend to err to the side safety. The hope is that the angler will stay under those recommended weights and actions to minimize breakage. Interestingly enough, we use many of the same principles in Aircraft construction, hence my background in composites.

What a tremendous batch of posts, guys! Thanks to all of you who have taken the time and effort to share this interesting information. Even though I doubt if all this will make most of us better fishermen, it sure has been worthwhile reading. Special thanks to those of you who have a technical understanding of these things, for your willingness to enhance the knowledge of the rest of us. I believe this epitomizes the overall cooperative spirit of this forum. .

abbey, abbey, abbey..............................ROFLMAO! i have read and re-read this with some interest. i haven't had a problem of sorts, but how would oyu know if oyu do? i mean if oyu are using these rods regularly would oyu REALLY notice a difference in it? i mean it has to wear down ever so slowly so that oyu would not notice it. now if oyu store it where the weather would "help" the natural breakdown i can see it. but if sotred PROPERLY during winter and summer when not in use, i don't see this as something oyu would notice. after all, most of us CHANGE rods before something lie this would happen......right? new products, new monkey?

Ive got an old berkley, thought the same but found out the truth,im catching bigger bass than 15 years ago lol. And the same rod in ohio say at deer creek is the same rod when faced with thick veggies at gville, just not suitable under the conditions. As far as any change that might have occured bet its under .0005 over a period of 15 years action wise. |
