24 volt system

Anybody ever think to try 3 8volt golf cart batteries for a troll batteries? I know that they are super deep cycle.

I can't say that I ever considered it. It would take an additional battery charger and the wiring would be a little more involved. The other thing is that I would check with the maker of the trolling motor. I would hate for a warranty (for a new trolling motor) to be voided due to that. It will be interesting to hear what the rest of the group has to say.

In principal, it should work fine.

Your trolling motor doesn't know the difference.

You would probably need a dedicated golf cart battery charger, as most marine setups have 12V rails.

Not a huge problem, as many people own their own golf carts...you're probably not stuck with some industrial bulk charger like you'd find at a golf course cart storage.

Of course, it might cost a bit more...

I've seen 24V chargers. Seems that if you connect your charger to the end of the series it should work.

The worst problem with using "whole stack" chargers, instead of single battery chargers, is they will accelerate the breakdown of the weakest battery in the series.

You might have 7.95V, 8.05V, and 8.0V in series, giving 24.0V.

When the TM runs the stack down to 21V, the +/- 0.5V will grow a tiny bit each cycle.

This is what actually happens in a 6-cell, 12V battery, even though we tend to think of it as a single battery. It's why a 12V battery needs to be "equalized" periodically for longest life.

Three separate 8V chargers would be best, though I am not personally aware how available they are.

My question would be why? More space required, specialized chargers (3 seperate vs a 2 bank 12v), what about replacement if you're away from home on a trip - spoiler for me. Weight? Wet cells - I would never give up an AGM to go to a wet cell battery, too much maintenece. I doubt they would be cheaper, either. So again, what would the benifit be? Just a question for agrument? OK, but I see no advantage.

Not planning to do it but I could use some more weight in the nose of the boat.

A little more weight in the front of the boat would be useful. 17-1/2 ft with 200hp plus fuel plus engine battery and various other stuff in the rear compartment makes for my troll motor to barely get all the way into the water. I should probably go on a reverse diet as I weigh 135lbs soaking wet. As I said before, this is mainly for discussion only.

question....do oyu not have storage space in the front of this rig? i find it hard to think that some of oyur stuff couldn't be sotred towards the front., like.....rods,boxes of baits ,anchor,etc,etc.......just asking ok? ihave over 300# of crap stored all OVER my rig, hahaha. not bragging, jsut saying oyu can even out the load in that rig and make it level buddy.

17'6" boat with a 200 HP outboard? What kind of boat? I don't know of any 17'er rated for that many ponies.

My boat is a mol die oldie Ranger 373V. I've already moved the 2 grp. 27 deep cells to the bow. The limited rod storage is forward on the port side. I suppose that I could put more ice in the front live well/ cooler.

ok, i see now. oyu are correct, not much storage up front in them old rangers. but i am like bruce here, is it rated for a 200 hp motor? i had an 82 model way back when and it was only rated for a 175, had a 150 on it. better chec it out before you get a ticket buddy. not trying to scare you or nothing, but just wanting to try to help you out ok?

as for extra storage, you can build some extras up front, extend the deck and make a much better platform for oyurself. jsut takes plywood, time and of ocurse a little money.

Yeah, it's overpowered. Rated for 175. Had 200 on when I bought it. I have been thinking of extending the deck back to the consoles but that will be my winter project. That would take care of the weight problem but right now I'm having too much fun fishing.
