Some tips for caring for your line

Most of these are pretty obvious but still might be a good refresher.

The main 2 that I feel are the most important are, retie often and take special care in tying your knots well, especially with fluorocarbon. Bad knots cause lost fish.

My worst self inflicted,totally avoidable,self defeating,absurd Trait.
I'm usually more concerned about the next spot or next cast and I neglect to remember I'm currently at the last spots next stop.

Because of my fear of crying I'm not even going to think about how many cranks I've lost because of what I feel strongly is my lack of line care and retieing. If I count the jigs and plastics........we'll talk when I get released from the nut ward.

But caring for your line is probably more about lacking (delete lacking) laziness than anything. We (I) get in a hurry, racing from spot to spot, and we(I) often just try to get our rods strapped and ready to run as quickly as possible. Those few seconds of haste can really damage your line and cause a weak link in the chain between you and the fish.

Thanks, Joe. I need all the reminders I can get. Like jd said, it's usually just laziness on my part. I try to be better about line care every year, but I'm sure I could still re-tie more often!

I usually check my line on 3 occasoins - after catching a fish, after freeing a hang up, and before I lay the rod back on the deck after fishing with it. It doesn't take but a second to pinch the line between your thumb and finger to make sure it's ready to go next time you pick it up. Knots, I take my time with a knot and it's one reason I use Norman speed clips for my cranbaits, I change them (crankbaits) often and if I retied a knot each time, that's at least a 1/2 hour out of my day............. LOL!

I am very bad about checking my line. I guess it's a good thing I don't hook too many fish.

I saw that facebook. Good read, and I can confidently say I'm good at fallowing all those tips but retying often, lol!

100% true for 99.9% of us.

I screwed up by not checking my line (twice). I've never had just a random break off and in a tournament last year I had two. One was a toad (we were on big fish most of the day). But lesson learned really quick and now I tie, tie and retie most of the day.
