Trolling Motors

What brand, extras, etc. do you guys recommend for trolling motors. And how much thrust to push a 20 foot walkaround.

Do you want a transom mount or bow mount? 12V or 24V? Minn Kota makes a 35 to 55 lb thrust 12v... Be more specific on type and size of boat. There are alot of types and sizes out there to choose from.

Would probably need a transom mount due to the fact the bow is probably a good 3 feet above the surface of the water. And also I asked this question becuase I don't know what I might need or whats out there. So I don't know what more info to give you.

Chris-how much does the boat weigh? That is a major factor determining what size TM to use.

Mine is in ththe 2000-2200 lb range, and I use a 71 lb thrust tm. It came with a 43 lb thrust that just wasn't powerful enough when fishing a wind. I wouldn't go with less than 70 lbs for a boat that heavy.

I've used motor guide on my last two boats..havn't had any major problems.
I've heard many anglers swear by motor guide and some for minn-kota but I think it's the classic chevy vs. ford argument. If your buying new buy from a dealer that can take care of any warranty work(especially if you ever plan to use it in salt water). While you may have to pay for professional installation remember it is just that. Any reputable dealer will stand behind their work and their product.

my lil boat came wih a minn kota which burned up on the first useage.-it caught fire- the boat dealer tech was running it during there shake down /break in cruise. he replaced it with a moter guide a 46 pounder which was alright till i broke it-doh!- i replaced it with the 5200 proseries with the #25 gator break away mount. my lil boat barly weighs 800 pounds with out the 50 horse yammy.

one more thing bow mounted tm user's i have broke a pull rope a couple of times in the last 4 years. so heads up on saving you some major $$$ the replacement rope and handle cost like $19. you can remove the end cap on the handle and buy a lenth of pull string rope at your local lawn mower shop. ok so it is white but last longer and i think i paid $6 for 9 feet..

You can do better than that. Just get some white nylon cord the same diamatar as the TM rope-20' for $3 or so will last a long time-just pop the cap of the handle and replace the rope.

actually,
alot of the guys in my bass club replaced their nylon ropes w/steel cable....
dont know the cost effectiveness but i gotta assume it would last forever!!!

I got a Motorguide and a Minnkota, bothe 56 lb thrust for a 14 ft. aluminum boat.I haven't had a problem with either brand, I use the Minnkota because it is quieter than my motorguide, but not by much. People usually swear by or swear at one brand name or another, I think they are all pretty good.

I've had many minn kotas and they are some tuff pups that always work. However, my new rig has the new digital Motorguide and I have to say it's pretty nice. The only problem I have had to date is a loose cable that just needed a bolt retightened in 2 seconds. I think the biggest difference between minn kota and motorguide is the mounts. I definitely like the motorguide gator mount much better than the bulky MK mount. It is much more aesthetically pleasing and much more low profile.

Here in Tennessee you will not see very many Minn Kotas, we all use Motorguides for a reason, they last!

I run a Motor Guide 71 lb thrust 24 volts with a break away shaft. No problems,no worries. With an 18' boat that thing will scoot.

That thing must really move. I have MKs on my little 11' and my 16' aluminum boats. Both are about #30lbs. For the 16' I think it is too small. Anyway the only problem I have had has been with both of them and that is the pedal. One with the stiffness and the other with the wiring and the "go" button not working all the time which is frustrating when you are drifting into shore quickly.

I contacted Minnkota and they told me the basic rule was 2 pounds of thrust for every 100 lbs of boat - including the people on board, fuel, gear etc. For your app I would suggest a 24volt system.
