Another plug for the zoomie...
As I wrote in this thread, I used the zoomie for this first time this past weekend and had good luck with it (Again, thanks to Mac for sharing his zoomie creation info with me!). I caught 7 LM using it on in 2 outings on Saturday, while my uncle caught 1 on a topwater lure and my dad didn't catch a single fish. When I headed back to MN on Sunday, I left a pack of the zoom speed worms and some hooks for it with my dad and showed him how to rig it (T-rigging is brand new to him, so he's still practicing that ). He went back to the lake by himself on Sunday night and caught a 4-5 pound bass (19", but he forgot his scale at home) and another small bass using a Gene Larew Salt Craw that a buddy had given him after the skunky outing the night before. After catching another smaller LM on the craw, it was trashed and he didn't have any more, so he then rigged up a zoomie. Within minutes he was battling what he thought was the bass of a lifetime. After a 10-15 minute battle, he finally landed a 32" channel catfish (17" girth). We're estimating the weight at 14-16 pounds, but that's just based on how heavy it felt to him and what we can find online for length/weight charts for cats. It's at least twice the weight of any fish he has ever caught in his lifetime (he will be 76 in June), and he was as excited as I've ever seen him when we Skyped that night! He caught another small LM a bit later on the zoomie before having to call it a night because it was too dark to keep fishing. He hadn't caught a fish at this lake in weeks and that covered probably 10-12 outings.
He was only able to take pics of his fish on the ground, so they aren't great shots, but I will try to add them to this thread in the next day or two. Last edited by WatterBoy; 05-24-11 at 05:51 PM. |
