Default depth finder

First off I'm not sure whether its not worth the money for me right now to get one. I'm looking for a portable depth finder in the $100 range. The Eagle Cuda 128 portable looks pretty nice at $100. Also there is the Humminbird smartcast system which looks pretty nifty, but its got a poor resolution and I don't really care for a depth finder in ponds that I would be bank fishing from b/c most ponds around here are man-made and have a uniform construction. So the question is, whould I even bother with one, and if so which portable one should I get?
