Pitching and Flipping combo
Hi,
Just trying to decide on a good flipping and pitching combo. Im thinking about getting the Shimano 100mgFV flipping reel as I have the 50mg and aboslutely love it. Also Im looking at a Shimano Crucial 7'6" Heavy flippin stick. Again I have a couple casting crucial rods and they are great. Would this be a good combo or anything else yall might recommend? I'm just getting back into fishing, and I am new to flipping and pitching, but I want good quality stuff. I saw the Argent flippin reel, but it just looks more cheaply made even though I saw it was recommended by Danny Breuer. Also does anyone know if the Bass Pro store carries the crucial flippin stick as the website doesnt show it as an option. If not where can I get it? Thanks |

First off, welcome to the site.
I think would make a good flipping combo, even though I'm not a big shimano reel fan. I do, however, love shimano's rods. you can definately pitch and flip on the same set-up, but some prefer different rods for each. For flipping, the norm is a 7'6" H rod like you described, although some people like even longer than that. I think the 7'6" is good. It also does make a good pitching rod, however, some people prefer a shorter rod (7' H). I used to use a 7'6" MH flipping stick for both techniques, but recently bought a 7'H for pitching. (Then I started using my flipping stick as a swimbait rod, so now I'm doing both with the same rod again, lol). I like the 7' for pitching closer range, but the 7'6" helps to get a bit more distance, especially with flipping. BB P.S. www.tacklewarehouse.com for you crucial flipping stick (free shipping too!)

Welcome to the forum!
I think that the rod is a pretty darn good choice! I'm not sure about the reel though, as far as I know, that reel is a finesse reel, which flipping is not! I would look at some Daiwa reels like the Viento, Fuego, or 50th Anniversary Zillion. The Viento would probably make a pretty darn good flipping reel, with the twitching bar and all. But the rest are just good quality reels, I don't see why they wouldn't make good for Pitching and Flipping. And if you're interested in shimano reels, then check out the Chronarch (300$), it makes a good team up with a Crucial. If you're interested in high end stuff, than check out the new Cumara reaction rods, they have a 7' heavy one. It don't say jigs, but it will be a SUPER light combo if you also get the Core. Again, get everything from tackle warehouse, you've got free shipping and free offers, they also got the 50th Anniversary Zillion on sale for 200 right now!

I'd stay away from the Reaction series. Because, like the name implies, it is for reaction type baits: cranks, spinnerbaits, etc. It is going to have a slower action, which is not good when pitching and flipping. For those, you want the fastest action you can get (F or XF)
I did forget about this in my other posts, so... I prefer a high speed reel when pitching and flipping to get my bait back to boat as fast as possible to make another cast/pitch/flip. Also, the high speed reel helps bring in the slack before the hookset, which is very important when fishing jigs and pitching/flipping. That being said, I don't know about the Shimano reels, but the Daiwa Zillion is avail in a 7.1:1 gear ratio. The Daiwa 50th Anniv. Zillion and the new Daiwa Aggrest are the fastest reels on the market at 7.3:1 gear ratios. (I think the new Coastal Zillion has this too). BB

I like the 200 Series Shimano Curados for pitching and flipping. The are fast and smooth, and have a very low profile. The Curados have always been good to me. Specifically, I use the left handed Curado 201E7 on my combo. That way I can always keep my dominant right hand on the rod. Took a bit of getting used to, but I'm more comfortable than ever now.

Thanks for the replies guys and welcoming me to the site. Im sure Ill be back.... a lot! Ill look into those reels you guys recommended. Those shimano core reels are at 7:1 ratio, and the FV (flipping version) has a thumb bar for pitching. Like I said, I do have a regular 50mg core reel and I love it so much, I may just have to give the 100mgFV a chance. Whoever wrote about the cumara rod, those things are awesome! I have a cumara paired with my core reel and it is the lightest smoothing combo Ive ever held. I can literally feel ever tiny detail of the bottom, my lure, or a fish tick! But I will go back to the crucial series for a flippin stick. Thanks for the help again!

It would be nice for them to add a couple more rods to the Cumara (not reaction) series. Maybe another 4-6" from the 7'2" and in a MH and a H.
If you are really happy with your core, get another. I've heard they're great reels, and match with the Cumara rods nicely. BB

I'm not a Shimano fan either, but the Shimano Castaic (actually the Japanese version - Quickfire) is what I use. Thumb bar is great. Only Shimano I own, there is nothing else like it for flipping/pitching.

I flip and pitch with a St. Croix Mojo rod and an Abu Garcia SX high speed reel. I really like how smooth the SX is and the 7.1:1 ratio gets the bait back to the boat in a hurry.

Been using Fenwick HMG flipping sticks for years, but they are heavy and can be tiring to use all day long. Checked out a lot of rods and found an American Rodsmiths 7'6'' one piece Flipping stick. It is light weight, very sensitive, and a pleasure to use all day long pitching and flipping. A Revo S reel with 65 lb Power Pro completes the package. Have used this outfit for several years without a single problem.

The Ardent Flip-N-Pitch reel would be a darn good one for Flippin' N Pitchin'. Why? Because, well, it's made for Flippin' N Pitchin'. Link : http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st..._SearchResults
Match the reel up with a Shimano Crucial swimbait rod, 7'11 medium/heavy action model - http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st..._SearchResults This combo would be KILLER for pitching and flipping.

I use a Fenwick techna 7.6 flipping stick and a castaic reel and I enjoy the setting. I don't like to mix brand usually but I have to admit that I can't use any other reel than the castaic for flipping or pitching. The flipping switch on the reel is too good and easy to use

The Crucial would be an excellent choice and probably be excellent for lighter weights like 3/16 to 3/8 or up to 1/2. I punch heavy grass with G. Loomis Mossyback 7'5" H/F and it's excellent for 1oz + weights. I have a 7' MH St. Croix Premiere that I use for the lighter weight baits. It's good but I probably should have waited and picked up the Avid.
