after what I saw this weekend, I may have to agree to a fall spawn. As I was paddling towards the shore, I noticed 2 minnows in the water that were somewhat large for minnows. After taking a good look I noticed they were bass fry but only about 1.5" long which would be consistant of a newly hatched fry.

I have read that bass can and sometimes do spawn at different times of year, so long as the other factors of water temp and all those kinda things are ok.

You can get a fall spawn from largemouth in some waters when the water temps start coming back down to spring like readings.

After seeing a few other posts about this same thing...I decided to do a little lookin up and found a few mentions of it.

it is right in the the neighborhood of 80 dergee water here. there is nothing that says bass can't spawn twice a year.. after all deer have 2 ruts a year..i understand the growing season between here and ny are shorter and i know that these bass -according to the dnr- are northern strain bass.. if they would be spawning that would explain the bass being caught in 2-5 feet of clear water. -see my fishing reports-

Looks like Mycro infected fish. Little red spots on belly area and tail was bloody and missing. Large head and small body from lack of food assorbtion. Standard issue in our bay..

Fresh water fish get it too.

Or it could be an intestinal obstruction. Saw the same thing due to a plastic worm in the gut.

I have caught about six LGMouth like that and hundreds of convict bass.

sorry captain but i checked. no gill mites the nasty lil beggers are in this area. i looked before i released it, it was clean..

now it could have been a gut obstrution.. but a bass this size would have been landed and hauled in. the closet launch is about 6 miles from this area and down stream..

Be glad it is not mycro or dermo. As far as the fish having an obstruction it could be snail or another C&R lost fish at the spot. But to find out would require killing the fish so lets just leave it a mystery.

Have you read the radio tagging reports from MD DNR before? I will post it as it will really open your eyes to LGMouth about there habits.

On Tillery about a month ago there were alot of visible shad. Three weeks ago these shad were not as heavy. Last week there were almost no visible shad. "Looks" like the bass have been eating. Granted these shad were small (appx.1"). Maybe thats not big enough for the L/M bass, the white bass had a field day.
Thats why I mentioned Badin, it was the same way out there.

My guess is that this fish has either dumped her spawn out of season, a strange oddity of nature or it could be the bass was sick and that allowed a snapping turtle to make a meal out of a portion of her tail. The part of her tail that was fanning the water just above some big snappers jawls.
