				 | Anybody ever find bass in a beaver pond?

My apartment neighbors the woods where the old state mental hospital graveyard is located. It has a bunch of graves from the 1820s, but I was walking through there the other day and also saw a pretty decent sized beaver pond with standing timber and assorted laydown pads and a soft mud bottom. I was able to see minnows in the shallows near the water chesnut, but unable to see any larger fish. My question is this; can the average beaver pond, say 1/3 acre in size, looks to be from 3-5 feet deep, sustain a population of gamefish, notably bass? Or would the possibility of a dam breakage and subsequent loss of habitat preclude any populations from getting started? Anybody have any success fishing beaver ponds before?

i have a pond that looks like what you are describing. i think that anybody of water will hold bass, you just have to find out for yourself. if it has baitfish,it porbably has bass though.

Yep, and caught fish out of them too but the pond needs to be established for at least two years, have a good food source, and a way for the fish to get there (feeder creek from a pond, etc.).

I have a beaver pond that has been established for about 10 years, I tried fishing it the other day and caught the biggest bass I have ever seen. It was easily 8 or 9 pounds. I foresee a very productive summer this year.

You know what I found neat was as usual it came up as a new post to me and without any looking for original post date because I know I'm going to read it anyway. Then I found a post from ZOOKER.....I've heard so much about him and how he worded things with great knowledge and straight to the point in very easy terminology. I always felt I missed out on something....Now I know I really did! Dixiewhistler welcome to the site! I also thank you for the post! I'm looking forward to learning from you.

I know I am supremely guilty of grave digging on this thread, but I couldn't resist. I was doing a search on fishing beaver ponds and that came up so I had to post my catch. No, this one I didn't put back, this one had to go on the wall. I know, vain as all get out, but it was the biggest I had ever seen. Till I caught the next one that was even bigger. She went back.

Nice fish by the way. If you're looking to get the fish mounted in the future I'd suggest taking a couple good pictures and a length and width measurement and then have a replica made. They look better and last longer than a skin mount (my opinion and some may disagree). And you can put the fish back to get bigger......unless you want some fresh fish for dinner. Once again welcome and we look forward to seeing more pics of big fish!! | |

YES!!!! I fished a very, very small pond in Florida on the water management district's land. Pulled some really really nice fish, and missed on a buzzbait I know for a fact would have gone over ten! Very clear water, lots of bream and frogs for them to eat. Give it a whirl, the worst thing that could happen is not catching fish! Edit: Dang it... lol -_-
