My Wife's grandpa has a bass boat, I want to say it is a Nitro, but I can't promise it. It has been sitting in his garage for roughly 15 years now since it has been cranked. He is ready to start taking it out again. He knows that the seals in the motor are probably shot so he is taking it to the marina to have it overhauled and checked out.

Someone told him that since it has sat out ofthe water so long that it won't float right. This guy says that the fiberglass tends to get into a dry rot state and will let water seep through into the hull. I can see where this guy may be coming from, but then again I have a feeling that he is full of "you know what"

Has anybody on here ever heard of this?

I've only heard it on wood boats, check for cracks in the haul

first of all once glass has hardened and been clear coated with gel cote it is completely water tight. i have a 71 with oringinal gel cote with NO LEAKING ISSUES i know of a 57 glass slipper -it's a super rare boat- with original clear cote it don't leak...

now nitro is a fairly new name brand. if it is an older say early 90's it might be called a bass tracker.same boat as a nitro differant name.

now your wife's gramps is right every seal,gasket,and rubber hose MUST be replaced. the carbs will need to be completely rebuilt. don't for get lower seals and a new water pump empeller-some are steel and will rust- tell gramps to be ready for some sticker shock. to do all that at a marina you will likly drop $4-6 hundred bucks very quickly..

Welcome back Zook!! I knew you would be able to give the complete low down on this. I'm not sure what year this boat is, but my remembers riding i it when she was a teenager which would have put it being made in the late 80's , real early 90's so it might not be a Nitro. That is why I said that I can't promise it. He does understand that he is going to have to drop some money into it to get that motor up to par. Believe me though, he has it!!!

the gaskets and seals for my 71 johnny cost $150 just for them. i rebuilt it my self ,it runs good..-gussles gas like it was 150 horse though- i put all new rings and every thing i think i got around $300 in just parts..

A boat of that age is very likely to have wood in the construction...stringers, and in the transom. This is where the danger of deterioration lies. There must be NO rot on these areas, especially in the transom, where failure can be fatal to YOU!
ONLY a qualified inspector can tell you if all is well.

I'm in no way a qualified inspector, but I have checked it over pretty good and it all looks and feels really stable. There is no flex in the transom at all whatsoever, he has a transom saver on it which really helps in my opinion. This thing is like a hidden treasure because it has been in a well kept garage since day one. Even when he was actually using it, it was never taken out on rainy days, so I know that the nothing has gotten any more wet than it would have out on the lake on a normal day.

trim the moter all the way up then grab the skeg and try to move it up and down. if it wiggles even a little your transome is shot..
