Default Finally some bass!

Kevin got a cat on a Creme worm!

Man it was a great night! We went to a new spot that I already knew of, but always believed to be off limits. However, the other night a guy I talked to while fishing told me that he fished there quite often. I hooked up about seven times, but only landed three. But seeing as how I have had a run of one fish outings, and a case of the dinks, I'll take these three and be happy!

Now here comes the "fish story"... I hooked up with what I believe was the biggest bass I have ever caught. It was simply huge. If it wasn't 10 pounds I'll eat my hat. I hooked into it, and had a heck of a fight. My drag is not super tight, but it's not way loose either. He took it and ran out my line like a sailfish! I finally got him in, and up on deck and he started flopping wildly, before I could reach him the line snapped. I made a mad scramble to catch him but he flopped right over the side, and I saw him swim away with my worm fluttering at the side of his mouth. I have, on the advice of some people on this board, been trying a mono leader with my braid. That is what snapped. I am done with it. I had 14# mono on it and lost the biggest bass of my life....

I have not noticed any benefit from using it, so i am just going to stop. I'll let ya'll know how that goes.

Congrats on the great outting John! Always feels good to get into some fish. Too bad about loosing the big one, but if I were you I wouldnt feel too bad. You hooked her and had her within arms reach and got a good look at her, enjoyed the fight, and then she broke off which means she is free to spawn next spring and make more bass for ya to catch. I release most of the bass I catch, especially the bigger ones. If I loose one like that I still feel good knowing I was able to get her to strike in the first place and enjoyed the fight while she was on.

Hmm...once the fish was on the deck, there woulda been very little tension on the mono, even with a 10? pounder...I'm thinkin fish story fer sure!
Still. sorry you lost him.

Well, actually I was standing on some rocks. They were kinda like steps, and he was on a lower rock. So, I had to lift him up to the rock I was on. I laid him down and went to pick him up, but he flopped over the side and the line when taught. that is when it snapped. He landed on the lower rock and flopped back into the water.

I wouldnt blame teh mono. It was probably the rocks that frayed teh mono. Yes not using mono and having straight braid would have prevented the loss, but it seems that braid tied to teh bait would be a dead give away to a fish that it wasnt real. I have never liked teh idea of braid except in pitchin and flippin when the cover actually conceals the braid.

Maybe try AbrasX flouro as a leader...

Tough luck John. At least you had her out of the water. I never use a leader. It's either straight mono or fc or braid. Depending on the water clairity or cover.
