Lower Unit servicing
So when I drained/changed the oil in the lower unit in the fall the oil was creamy brown/whitish indicating water got in, so I need to have the lower unit tested/serviced. Any rough idea on what it will cost? (I still work for a living and need to squeeze it into the budget) Thanks

I had my lower end serviced at BPS in Prattville, AL. It cost me around $150 with parts and labor. They had to replace all the gaskets because I had a small leak as well.
EDIT: Let me rephrase: I had the carburetor cleaned, the lower end unit oil changed, the gaskets replaced, and a new starter battery all for $280. I'm guessing the $150 was for the lower end unit. It might be less. IDK. |

Check your drain plugs, they should have a washer on them. Could be a simple fix if one is missing. More expensive issue would be a damaged seal that is leaking. Most shops will charge you an hour of labor + parts to change the lower unit. Here the hourly labor charge is $90/hr.

lower unit grease
if this was the first time you changed the gear lube your self the grease in the lower unit may not have been marine grade grease. all other types of lubes will look like you discribed. some shops will try to get by with a cheaper automotive rear end grease. if this is your first time as a do it your selfer put some marine lower unit grease in and test run it for a while then take another look.

I had it done at the boat place last year and I think they're straight shooters.
