				 | So how reel (Pun) are fishing shows?

Stolen from another site. I’ve co-hosted several TV Fishing shows in the past and let me tell you that “Most,”of the time, (Not All!) but “Most” of the fish that you see being caught on the show are caught prior to the actual filming of a show. Yep! now you might ask yourself; “well I saw the guy set his hook and then reel in the bass.” All I can say to you is this; “Don’t believe everything that you see!” with today’s editing equipment, professional camera personnel, and the right camera shots anything is possible. So let me explain how it works; #1, you cast out the sponsored bait product (whatever bait or baits the show is sponsored by, keeping in mind that the fish were actually caught prior to the show, and in most cases on totally different bait). #2, while you start your retrieve, you rare back with your rod like you just got a strike and pretend to set the hook! (on actually nothing at all). Then the camera will stop filming. #3, then, you simply reel your sponsored bait back in to the boat, grab a fish (in the case of a bass show, a bass) out of the livewell and place the hook of the “sponsored product” in the fish’s mouth. #4, Next you place the fish back into the water (with ease, and always keeping the slack out of your line), then you let the fish swim away from the boat. #5, then at this time, the camera starts rolling again and starts filming you fighting the fish back to the boat!...(Really quite simple!)That’s how Most! of the filming is done. It’s not so much the bait, or color, or technique used to catch the bass during the filming, they just want to show you how much bass all of these “certain baits” can actually catch! (but do they really?), that’s called Marketing, So what do you think? |

Say it ain't so. I can't wait for our own Conspirator Theory specialist NFE to weigh in on this topic. Guess I'll get a cup of coffee and wait for him to check in. |

joedog, an old fishing buddy of mine told me that's what they did back in the old days too. By old days I mean 70s-80s I think. Maybe it started as a way to save film and evolved into what it is now, I'm not sure.

Two words: "Helicopter Lure". (or maybe "spiral wrap"? ) I wouldn't put anything past people trying to sell stuff to fishermen.

I seriously doubt that this is how the majority of fishing shows are taped. I'm not saying it never happens but that is the exception, not the rule.

Whatever you do, be sure not to tell Bama anything about how Roaland Martin does this too. It would just kill the old boy. bwahaha

Might be true but you can usually see a bass hit a buzz bait on the shows. Hey Bama, don't worry! Roland doesn't need to fake it.

I agree with Jrob78 that not all shows resort to this.

Personally I watch fishing shows for entertainment not to decide which lures to buy. That's why I like Zona's Awesome Fishing Show they don't seem to have an agenda except having fun fishing. Besides if you believe everything you see on tv you're going to have a rough time getting through life.

That's a bummer, but I think I'm also with Joe on this one... I've seen plenty of times where they set the hook, fight the fish and land it, without the camera being stopped at all (at least I think, it don't stop ). But it no doubt happens, particularly on infomercials!

I'm an info junkie so I watch almost any and all fishing shows including fly fishing (which I only use popper fishing for Pans). In my book what catches another fish may have favorable results with bass.(ususally after modifications). But I'm looking for techniques, stratagies and the WHY! (why is said fishing presentation making the target react, positive or negatively). I pay attention to style of lure but never brand. You guys are here to give me the true brand comparisons and usually tell me why. With that said, I do like Tournament TV. I flat out guarantee these shows are not staged! Yes I will pay a little more attention to brand but not much. I don't think we really always get to see the secrets as much as they would like us to believe, at least right away. |

I can tell you first hand it takes hours of film to get 27 minutes of content that will keep people's attention. Producing a show is expensive and editing is part of the process. Just because editing is used to tell a story or send the desired message doesn't necessarily mean the message/information is any less valid. As another example, it's not unusual for the intro to be filmed last based on the actual footage you get. As informative as TV can be, it's an entertainment media whose sole purpose is advertising. Same goes for BASS txs, NASCAR, NFL....

This is how I feel as well. I have been on the water a few times and ran into local pros that were filming fishing shows and not once did I see anything that made me question the entigrity if their show. Not saying that it has never happened but I would want to know more information about the credibility of the guy who said this before I really put too much stock into it. I am not saying I don't believe him when he says he has seen this happen, but then again there are so many fishing shows out there and it's hard to believe that if it was happening more people wouldn't be spilling the beans.
