I wonder how big they get? It doesn't sound like they get very large. I find it surprising that it took until now to identify it.

The funny thing for me is that, while I didn't know it at the time, I have likely caught a choctaw. I seem to recall being disappointed with catching a small spotted bass on the chipola river a couple years back, when fishing for rumored shoal bass in the river.
Supposedly the bass is indistinguishible from spots, but there are no spots in that river. All fish were thought were spots are choctaw bass. It has nothing in common with a peacock bass which is a cichlid. The orange tail in the pic is probably cause the fish was really really small.

Their are minor differences between that,true spots,shoal bass ,Suwannee bass and sub species there of,most of which were semi immaterial as sport fish as not large by any means,yet feisty.It also has a bit more yellow in tail base.
