I might be more basic than yall. Yes there is a reason to know how to use several diffect types of hooks. But not for a beginner.
I am advocating newbies picking 3 baits and sticking with them. That means learn to rig a worm 1 way and then go find the fish. Branch out later. I remember the first day I went bass fishing with my Dad I had all this info swirling out in my head on Lake Kissimmee. I must have retied lures every 3 minutes. Finally the old man said the next lure you tie on will be your last or something like that, later on in the trip I got confidence with the producto worm and I started to catch fish. Wouldnt have done jack had I kept switching back and forth. Didnt know how to fish the 50+ baits I was trying and would never take the time to really learn.

Great point WTL. I know I have been guilty of 10 casts and switching out.

Dude you need to work on your spelling, but a lot of lures that the guys on tv use(Jimmy Houston) are crap, there are some good ones, but always try to imitate the forage that the bass are eating at your lake, and you will almost always catch fish |

wtl makes a very accrate point. alot of us are still pron to do this, i too. do this even now. one has to have self disclipline to stick with a specific bait. well said wtl. i need to remember that pal. thanks.

wtl does make a excellent point. when your first starting off you don't need to know why you need to know how. Then as you get more accustomed to the sport than you branch out and expand your knowledge more. Learning the hows and the whys.

WTL, do you mean that on like a higher plane sort of idea, or just buy one type of bait and fish it. And by one type of fishing, like texas vs carolina, and one lure is that one color or one type (ex. any color senko).
I may be trying to over simplify your profound piece of information that you have provided. I think that I try to learn as much as possible to "be prepared" (its the 12 years of boy scouts i blame) but I think that I do what you did, and try to many things at once. |

i think i can help out here pal. wtl (i think) means take 1 bait, fish it all day till you learn where and when and how to use it. let's say a worm, you have never used a 7" watermelonseed/chartruse tail texas rigged. fish it till you see where to put it how to drag, shake, hop and so on till you know as much as there is to know about this set up. then you use anotehr bait. i know you are saying that will take too long to do given all the lures out there. no it won't really. cause you aer using a worm. color is just matching to the seroundings and water, and so on.all in all i THINK this what he meant by this. and i concurr. this is why i am truly gonna use the jig as much as possible this year. learn and practice using it till i can use this with certainty i can catch fish with it.there may be times i won't throw it, like if the fish are hitting spinners. but somewhere, that day, i am gonna throw it. i VOW to keep one tied on a rod/reel.

right on bama, thats the best way, take one rod, one lure and learn it, once you catch fish on it, then the confidence builds.. the jig is a good example to guys that haven't got fish on it, just use it day in and day out and sooner or later something will chomp on it. After that you can really get into it

You guys are going to laugh, but I actually caught some fish on the Helicopter lures when they came out, on Lake Fork and Lak Ray Roberts (north of Ft. Worth). I didn't stay with them because they were expensive at the time and not readily available, but more than that they were a pain in the arse to rig up. The Banjo minnow is really a drop shot on steroids! I tried experimenting with some elastic cord but it never worked quite right.
