Ok great input. Now the rod deal and getting lighter. What about the use of titanium in a rod. Dense, light flexible but I'm sure weight plays a factor. But I'm not talking pure, more like a mix in one of thier blends. I've got rods with titanium guides and one of the sales point was lighter than other quides.
Is this just complete nonsense or is there something to this idea? |

Titanium is a very useful and versatile metal. Alloyed with other metals, you will find it in many top shelf rod components. The Recoil guides I prize so much are a Nickel-Titanium alloy.
However, you will not find Titanium in the rod blank itself. Carbon fiber is much stronger per unit weight. Titanium is tougher; i.e. more durable, which is why they use it in jet fighters. Titanium is also very corrosion-resistant. But Titanium is also very expensive to fabricate, especially compared to carbon fiber.

Hey Joe you've either hijacked your own 2 piece rod thread or it has managed to evolve into a sensitivity thread by natural mutation. Either way thinking outside the rod is good. Titanium does have some desirable properties but I think the deal breaker would probably be cost. Titanium powder (which is what you would need as a rod building material) currently costs about $5.50 a gram (even though it's the 8th most common metal on earth). 3 ounces is considered a very light rod @ 28 g per oz thats $462 for raw materials alone before you even get into R&D, machining equip & production costs, personnell etc etc etc. But try talking to a bona-fide metalurgist or chemist or maybe soneone in the rod business or maybe some of the rod builders on here, I bet they have their finger on the pulse of whats on the cutting edge of new age rod materials.

For those not in the know, Lamiglas used to make (and possibly still making) a series of rods that had titanium in them in some form. It was a top of the line series and not cheap. I don't think they make them anymore, but use of Ti in rods is not new. Interesting to say the least.

Nofear, kenneth, island thx. Kenneth guilty as charged! You know once they got talking materials and sensitivity of rods my mind just jumped into high gear. I never know if my questions should be asked in a seperste thread or a continueation of current thread. But my first question still stands.

JD,
IMHO, the only dumb question is the one not asked. BTW, the Ti rods Lamiglas built were salmon/steelhead rods. They looked awesome.

"do your own homewrk!" "do your own homework!" "do your own homework!"?? Darn I've looked and can't find it but your clue about the length of its existence has me intrigued and titillated! Please just go ahead and tell us. We'll be right over here sitting on the edge of our seat.

It's called a piezoelectric crystal. I'm sorry Roland Martin hasn't packaged it as the Wonder Tester 2000, so you don't believe it exists or works. But any instrumentation and controls engineer could put it together in a few minutes.
I offer up my knowledge freely on this board, and you are only showing your ignorance. If it offends you that I have an education, tough. Now go back to your banjo and chaw.

Gosh, I sure hope the states I work in don't find out I'm just a wanna be. They might revoke my licenses to practice.

I am having a real hard time deciphering all this subtle jabbing, just go ahead and say what you think.

Ok, now that we got that out of our systems lets get back my post. I'm the only one allowed to hyjack this thread!
47 posts, 11 mention more than a single piece rod, 14 if you count my own hyjacking and resulting answers. ( thanks guys) But I do agree sensitivity is a very key element in rod selection. Last edited by joedog; 11-04-11 at 11:46 PM. |

So Joe, how do you, or what do you do to determine how sensitive a rod is. Working in retail part time I have seen some interesting techniques, but in the end I believe it all comes down to the person holding the rod.
