I spend the winter months generally thinking about hunting, but I took a deer early this year so that really didn't help. Overall, I was doing pretty well until the Bass Pro Shops catalog came in the mail. It has been downhill since then.

Repeat after me, I'm a Bassaholic, and I know it! Now the only way to ever get rid of the Bait monkey is to buy everything constantly, until you feed him to euphoria, and then he rests for awhile, and then comes back again with a even bigger appetite.

What Ive learned to do is take my 2 1/2 year old son with me. This way, when I look at something he usually grabs it from me. Do you know how hard it is to take something a way from a kid that age. My wife tries, he screams, she gives it back......kaching another bag of stuff for me.

The easiest way for me to limit my spending in the tackle shop is to run out of money. Otherwise its impossible. But I've had lots of luck at being broke lately....

Last week I spent $225 at BPS. Then I went to Daves and spent $120. Then I went back to Daves this week and spent $140. It will never, I mean never give in. Those LC and Diawa baits are too much to pass up. I buy ,buy and buy. I am happy with the newer baits that I've purchased. Keep replacing new unused baits with the newer unused baits. It's an illness that I can't correct, it doesn't matter what I use.

Man,
that bait monkey just about had me tonight by the nads! I went on a beer run and was supposed to pick up a sub, ended up hanging a left to the tackle shop and they were stocking up on everything~ I needed to replace some Manns Minus-1 but all they had was the baby minus 1, started looking at buzzbaits, line, and just about everything else! I ended up just leaving , I will get some stuff I need in a few weeks...still having sticker shock over the price of plugs these days lol....plus the main reason I left some ex cop that used to hassle me was working there, he's old as dust now, but I still remember what a pr*ck he was back in the day... |

I find that if you feed his need in little bits and pieces,he tends to be satisfied.Although he did catch me with a sucker punch this past weekend and lightened my wallet by a hundred bucks.Claims I "needed" these things.I believe they're learning hypnosis..Ok I gotta go to Walmart now for some reason

The bait monkey lurks in my mailbox. First the BPS master catalogue. Then the Cabela's spring catalogue followed by several "topical" Cabelas catalogues. And after a few days, another BPS catalogue. I have already created a list for $300.00 worth of stuff. My wife thinks I am crazy. For me, once football season ends, it is time to start stocking up for the spring.
On another note, why is it that BPS only offers certain baits in limited colors? For instance, the Lucky Craft Suspending Pointer was only offered in two colors. What is up with that. I find it cool that Cabelas gets some of the manufactuers to produce special limited edition styles/colors. Last year, I picked up a limited color Rat L' Trap that kicks *** whenever it rains. So, I buy into the color thing sometimes. |

I agree he can't be stopped...but can be controlled. First you go through all your tackle and look at how much crap that you never use has accumulated. Estimate the cost of that stuff. Estimate the cost of the stuff that you have used but doesn't produce. Then make list of stuff you really need to replace. I've made it a habit to buy most of the tackle I need in jan. or early feb. Went to BPS and spent $340. Last weekend of jan. Then last weekend I went to Roger's to get the stuff I still wanted but didn't buy at BPS. Tackle was only $87.00 so I had the cashier grab another curado 200B5 off the shelf. $205.23 Total. I've still got about 150 hardbaits (mostly cranks)to refurbish and repaint. That helps too cause it's like you're getting a brand new bait without spending cash. But I don't believe most of the marketing crap I see out there and feel like I'm getting ripped off all the time and that helps keep the spending down.

Luckily I got a deal on these. Some guy's wife told him to get rid of his hunting or fishing stuff and he decided to get rid of the fishing stuff. |
