That's the beauty of fishing-you use what works for you!

I find I have more confidence in a heavier rod when setting the hook. On the other hand, when it comes to treble hook baits with the exception of big bruisers like a DD-22 I only throw them on medium action rods. I use a MH for those big boys.

thanks for all the advice fellas....got to try the new hook set out today, 1st hook set resulted in a burried hook and caught fish and the 2nd hook set resulted in a trip to the rod store had the rod two months...it was a my favorite M action rod and it is toast...lol...oh well...always need more reasons to feed the bait monkey

I agree with Reb 100%. I use to use a M action rod for plastics when first starting bass fishing, and since then i have moved up to a MH or H action rod. My hooksets improved dramatically after the change. Also, make sure your hooks are sticky sharp.

I guess that answered the question if the side sweep gave you a better hook set. Please remember your pull is much longer and you can sweep to hard. My guess is you don't need that information now since you have first hand experience. Also the more graphite in the rod the more likely if may snap if you give it all you got. This came from a rod builder that told me to not snap my wrists like in the old days when we fished together.
