whats the technique for fishing this?
ive had 1 one of these for a couple of yrs, just never tied it on until today.. the way it flutters back to the bottom i imagine would generate many strikes since it looks like a dying minnow. i basically did a stop & go retrieve & changed it up with quick jerking action and let it fall back down then quick jerk again, since i dont really know how to fish this thing i was just messin around, unless thats how you are supposed to fish it

Jim, I've been fishing these spoons for many years. For bass, I add a pork frog or similar trailor and work it through lilly pads and heavy grassy vegitation. I've never got a hit fishing it in open water other than mid depth weedbeds for pike, which it excells at. I'd use the same outfit you use for froggin.

I'll just add to the previous reply that when working it through lily pads or other vegetation, let it drop into holes and at the edges.

I fish it like the posts above described, except I will use 4 or 5 inches of a plastic worm tail as a trailer.

spoon
Another trick is to run a plastic worm threaded on the weed guard and then texas rig the worm on the hook, leaving the tail to waggle. This also helps to keep the lure weedless. After threading and before hooking, give the head end half of the worm a half twist to lock it better on the weed guard.
The spoon looks like a Johnson Silver Minnow, still being made.

Really depends on how deep your fishing and if your in a boat.
Flutter spoons are a go to on Lake Fork I'm told. Deep water and letting it flutter down to strike zone is very effective!

90% of my fishing is in less than 8fow with lots of cover and emergent vegitation and I DO NOT hit the water without one of those spoons! My favorite tactic is to bring it across the top of lily pads or emergent weeds till I get to an edge of open water. Let the spoon sit on the last pad or weed edge, carefully reel in slack and jiggle the rod tip to the point of sending off rings, then hop the spoon into the open water, hopefully making a bit of a splash when it does so.
In shallow water, a bulky trailer like a frog is a real advantage because it slows the rate of fall. BTW: I sometimes have bass explode on it as I am pulling it across the top to the edge, so I am in no hurry when I do so. |

In the 70's My Dad and I used to fish Currituck Sound Virginia. We would make it a point to fish Currituck each Spring...
Back then you could easily catch 100 Bass a Day...Dang, I sure miss those days... One of the Techniques we used, because that entire sound is about 5' Deep and around 12' at it's deepest, it is full of weeds. We would use that Johnsons Silver Minnow with a White Pork Rind (split tail) on the back hook. Absolutely would DESTROY the Bass. I remember one day my Dad had 7 Bass and they weighed over 49lbs. Sadly, in the 80's there were some Droughts and it allowed the Salt water go further North and the Bass fishing there is either completely dead or dang close to it.
