fishing deep
im gonna go out tonight and try some off shore fishing, ive got 4 spots in mind that i was told about last night. a few ledges and a creek channel that comes thru our small lake. ive never fished deep so ive got some questions. when im fishing the ledge do i throw up to the shallow and drag it down to the deep water? ill probably b using a jig. also what the heck do i do with the creek channel? use it as 2 ledges/drop offs or throw towards the middle of it? i have a cheap depth finder that will locate where it drops off so i should b able to find them. any help is appreciated

I've been fishing a lot swimbaits lately so I like to fish "uphill", anchoring in the shallows and casting deep. When I jig fish(and I am not an expert jig fisherman) I don't anchor, I fish downhill, staying in deep water, and casting shallow, letting the jig tumble down the ledges. As for creek channels, I usually follow them until they run into some other sort of structure, rather then waste my time fishing the entire length. What do they say...fish flats, ledges, points, channels, and humps, and especially where two or more of those things run into eachother?

I have to agree with Dogmatic on the jig presentation. Shallow to deep is how I would work my jig. I also agree with his comments regarding fishing structure. A creek channel is like any other type of structure. It needs something different to hold numbers of fish, like a bend near a shallow flat, or winding into flooded timber, or a rock pile or old bridge pilings. Things like that. And I would also definately be throwing a deep diving crankbait along with the jig!

When I fish ledges I try to drag the jig parallel to the ledge. Try to figure out if the fish are on top of the ledge or on the bottom of the ledge, then fish parallel to the ledge while keeping your jig on this part. This will keep your bait in the strike zone much longer.

i drug a jig from shallow to deep for a few hours last night. gave me a good idea of how this stuff works. had a couple nice bites but was more interested in figuring out how to fish deep than i was actually fishing deep haha. gonna keep at it and looking forward to gettin better

I have always preferred to fish away from banks. In the 80s and 90s I spent a lot of time hunting those places; humps, second drop-offs, deep holes/ledges. I found that some times they wanted the bait from the side, sometimes shallow to deep, and then deep to shallow. I was usually using a carolina rig or a deep divimg Risto Rap (I think thats what it was called), I just kept moving around till I found the right combination. I hope you are using bouy markers, it makes it a lot easier to visualize the structure. Good luck, there are a lot of fish out away from the banks!!

as far as presentation fishing deep, it is not any different than fishing shallow. try all angle, and uphill and downhill. the only difference in fishing deep, is that it just take longer to get to the bottom. also, do not be afraid to fish with enough weight. when it is windy, you will have to use more weight, because of wind drag on your line. wind drag affects your fall rate.

Fishing out in the middle, where everything looks the same(flat) was one of the hardest things for me to commit to. Catching a mess of fish out there will boost your confidence. I overcame the sameness and intimidation by dropping marker buoys at several key spots.....like on top of a hump or along the bend of a creek channel etc. I still keep 10-12 in my boat even though I don't use them as often as I did at first. Good electronics help. The reason the old saw that says 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish is often true because 90% of the fisherman can't stand the pressure of having to try and fish deep/unseen structure. Keep at it, you'll be glad you did one day.

I'd like to add one thing. A friend of mine used to slay bass in deep water on a 1/4 oz. black maribue jig with a 6 inch lizard as a trailer. I started using them and also do very well with them. It's been a while since I used that rig. I think I'll give it a go again soon.

8ft?!...that's a hoot, no offense. Guess it's more about open water, than depth. Congrats on the fish, and keep at it, soon enough, you will be,(like me currently) trying to figure out how to fish that hump that's holding fish in 25'.

yeah 8 ft isnt really that deep but theres really very little structure on the lake im fishing and the deepest part is about 18 ft. anything past bout 10 foot has nothing to hold fish so wont be catching anything any deeper than that.

^^^Sometimes depth is it's own cover....don't rule out that 18' water. We all know fish seek out edges/breaks/etc. The surface of the water is itself an appealing edge the bass use to their advantage(if they chase a baitfish to the top, where else can they run?) same thing goes for the bottom (structure or not) their prey has runout of room!

I've talked to pros that say they don't fish any deeper than their flipping rod is long(7', maybe 8'?)...so expanding your fishing horizons is whats really important, and figuring it out is what keeps us fishing.

It's true that there are some very talented shallow water specialist on tour, but I'm convinced the "one trick ponys" are at a disadvantage.

+1, I think that's why "these" Pros spend much of their time going around to rinky dink sport shows. I'm not a professional, and know that I can't just fish shallow, especially when the water temps are hovering around 80. Not to say these Pros don't have useful info. to share.

On deeper bodies of water, knowing where and understanding how fish relate to the thermocline can eliminate allot of unproductive water. Congrats on the fish, when you have time do a quick search on the net, it will make your fish hunting a little easier.

Florida has shallow water. One of the big lakes I fish averages 15 feet. Ihave been fishing points that fall off into 16, 18, and 21 feet. Also ditches where they have sucked sand up to build up the back yards of houses. Some of these ditches are 12 foot deep, that is go from 4 and 6 foot to 12 foot. These ditches may run as far out as 150 feet from shore. They may only be 6 to 12 foot wide and there may be several next to each other. Usually I fish shallow to deepand then across them. You must really maintain contact with your lure as you pull/bounce it down to deeper water. I am using drop shot/ 1/4 oz., original slider, 1/4 oz, and the good ole Texas rigged worm, 1/4 oz. all on 10 # test line. Haven't had any luck with crankbaits.
Just keep fishing that underwater structure, after a while it will all come together in your mind and you will visualize it with no problem. |
