Modifying Cranks?
I was wondering how you can take the internal rattle out of crankbaits? I want a more subtle presentation (I have a LC deep runner that has no rattles and love it)...any advice will help. Thanks!

I was readin last months BM, and they were talking about drilling holes to remove weight balls and packing the hole back with epoxy.

Usually you probably shouldn't try to open a crank, it will most likely change, if not ruin the action. It would most likely be very difficult to separate the body once the lip is glued to both sides, which is the way many cranks are made. The only way that I can see it working is locating the rattle chamber and drilling a hole, then dumping the ball out, then somehow patching it back up.

I was thinking more of the drilling versus the opening it up. So...if I were to drill it and fill the hole with epoxy, it would need to be painted over, correct?

If you drill a hole, try to get it into a white or black area. Fill it with epoxy or wood filler, either should work fine. Then sand over the hole until its smooth and repaint.

It would probably be easier and cheaper to just buy a bait with no rattles.

the switchback crankbait has a special chamber in it, which allows you to "turn the rattles off" you hold it then turn it upside down, shake it and turn it clockwise to lockt he rattles , then turn it upside down, shake it and turn it counter clockwise to unlock them [ think the direction is right] i cant find my BPS catalog to verifly

MrP, It sounded weird how you worded it, saying it can turn the rattle on and off on any crank.
The switchback shad is a good crankbait. If you buy some though, make sure the rattle works before you purchase it. One thing I can say is the paint jobs are tough as nails. BB

Drill a small hole until you reach the crank cavity, drop some Super Glue in it to glue the bearings, then apply some epoxy to seal the hole, sand until itīs smooth and clear coat ( you can use finger nail polish ), presto ! silent crankbait. The only thing he didnīt say is which kind of Super Glue, I suppose it must be the one that doesnīt dry up in an eyeblink. |
