My First Tournament
Its been almost 14 weeks since I ordered my new boat (which is due the end of this month) and since then have stocked up on almost every possible tackle option, new lures, new rods and reels....really the works. I have been on several web sites , chatted with other anglers, read every Bass magazine, have spent a few days on the water with Pros, watched a bunch of DVDs , joined a Bass club and this Saturday I am a co-angler in my first tournament. I spent all day this past Saturday picking the 4 rods and reels I plan to bring ( 2 BC & 2 SR) and narrowing down my desired tackle and lures into one tackle bag so I dont bring too much and I am ready to go. Or i think I am.( At least I hope I am) I called the angler I am fishing with and offered to help pay for Gas and bring lunch and he was very appreciative.
Looks like we will start at safe light and finish at 3 .Pray for sunshine and wish me luck! I will report back after I catch my limit. Its show time ! |

I can't wait to hear your report G. Just wait until those jitters set in just minutes before they call your boat number and you get turned loose, there is no other feeling like it man. Good luck and have fun.

c-rig is right, there is no other feeling like the start of a tournament... especially when you are on some nice fish. Don't let the pressure get to you though, just go in to the tournament with an open mind, and just go fishin'. When I first started fishing tournaments it was intimidating to me, but after the first year I just learned to relax and go with the flow, and the wins and high finishes just fell into place. Now go get em'!!

I bet he doesn't sleep much, if any at all. I still can't sleep the night before I go to the lake, even if it's just fun fishing. If I plan on getting any sleep the night before fishing I have to make myself wake up early the morning before I go to the lake so I am tired that night and even then it's a crap shoot.

I am saying no to sleep as well. Additionally, being it is the first tourney, he is probably checking his boat and gear every time he wakes up. I wouldn't be surprised if he has tied and then retied baits a few times so far tonight.
BTW, I am leaving for the lake in 6 hours and just changed from a white spinnerbait to a chatterbait. I will likely change it back in an hour

I am kinda suprised that we haven't got a report yet. Maybe G-man won and is running drunk through the streets in his underwear lol.

You have to win to do that? I guess I need to change my post tourney rituals.

WHAT A BLAST!
I was the co angler and the other guy who's boat I was on was AWESOME! He knew this was my first Tourney so he was very helpful and considerate. He always placed the bat at a angle so I could fish good spots. We took off at Safe light about 7:15 and by 8:30 I had my first spotted bass 13 inches long 1 pound 4 oz. Then by 11:ish I could a second spotted bass slightly bigger.Had several bites but couldn't get others into the boat. I learned never to go to a Tournament without a weigh in bag- Ha Ha! Although I didn't sleep the night before I was up at 4 am and at the Waffle House for breakfast and meet my Angler. I didn't feel so bag as there were guys who didn't catch any or caught only one. So in short I LOVED IT. I plan on fishing a 2 day Tournanment in May. Im going to take a nap now. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |

Congrats on getting the first one under your belt. I am glad that you had a good partner who assisted you.
I have been there on the weighbag thing. I have forgotten them in the car or had them fly out of the boat. I now keep one in the boat and a spare in my car in case I am a backseater.

I am glad you had a good time. I am also glad that you drew a good partner, that makes all the difference in the world. I keep a weigh-in bag in a storage compartment of my boat, but most tournaments around here require that you use their weigh-in bags.

I started fishing some tournaments this spring and it really does take it to a whole new level with the extra excitement! I've been lucky to have a guy thats fished lots of tournaments and had good success helping me out. It really makes a big difference being able to call someone up and get some advice. Websites like these are really nice too!
