Fishing Line

I purchased some cheap triline about a month or two ago. I've been fishing roughly once a week, since then and I've been dissapointed in how much the line has been fraying. Today, I finally got sick of it, threw the line in the trash and headed to Gander Mountain. I wasn't planning on getting anything chinsy this time, so I spent fifteen bucks on some Berkley Vanish Transition, eight pound test.

Then and only then did I take the time to actually read some reviews on BVT, and from what I've read this stuff has extreme problems with breaking --> and not just at the knot. Gander Mountain put the line on my reel for me, so I can't exactly take this stuff back and exchange it for fireline or anything. Is this BVT as bad as people say it is and if it is do you have any idea in how I can make the best out of a bad situation?

Any recommendations on what brand of fishing line I ought to purchase? Primarily, I am bass fishing and slashing x-raps or spinnerbaits, every now and then I tear into some huge pike or catfish. In a few weeks though, we're going up north on vacation and I'll be doing some jigging for walleye.

For a mainline, horrible. Leader, works fine.

Try some Stren Original or Magnathin if you're looking for some decent line.

I've read good things about Sufix . . . is there a big difference between siege and elite? Which type of sufix do you guys prefer?

i mainly use power pro braid in 30lb and fireline in a 20lb and for mono i use 12lb trilene big game .

Here's the thing, Trilene, like you said, is crap. I cannot speak for the fluoro, but the mono is. Also, Vanish is not designed for the reapeated casts and brutal hooksets of bass fishing. Here's what I'd use in you're sit-chee-a-shun.

For the stufff you're useing for bass, I'd go with mono or a copolymer of some kind. Stren or Suffix mono all the way. As for which suffix mono: Elite will be like the standard mono, while seige will be stiffer, but more abraision resistant. As for a copolymer, try P-line Fluoroclear. I recently tried some Stren Super Knot in 8lb test and love it. I've read it has problems with breaking, but I haven't experienced any. You could also go with a super line like Fireline or a Braided line. Power Pro or Suffix braid. I'd stay away from fluoro cause it is a pain, unless it's a leader.

As for going on vacation and jigging for 'eyes, the Vanish should work as that is what it was designed for.

What Trilene you purchased ? I´ve been fishing with Trilene XL, XT and big Game for over two decades and I can hardly say it´s crap. It´s a matter of choosing which one is best for fishing the various type of cover and bottom composition I found around here.

XL is very limp, soft, low memory and handles great problem is that it has very low abrassion resistance so it´s not good for fishing on chunk rock or in/around woody cover.

XT is exactly the opposite of XL

Big Game is in between the properties of both leaning towards the heavier duty side of XT.

I´ve fished with Magnathin, if one of the complains about XL is the low abrassion resistance in Magnathin the problem is twice as much, it suffers wear in an eyeblink.

I've got to go with Raul on this one. I know how many of you feel about Trilene, but I have always used XL smooth and had very few, if any problems, I could blame on the line. For what I'm fishing, it works very well.

I'm with Raul here. I've used Trilene since I was five or six and haven't any complaints that other monos don't normally experience.

I will say Stren Magnathin is a good line, but, its abraision resisitance is close to none.

I love Berkley's lines, Trilene Big Game, XT, XL, MAXX, and Sensation are all great lines and each one has it's place. But for me i like Big Game or XT for casting rigs, and XL or sensation for spinning.

I've gotten multiple spools of Trilene XL from NAFC in 6lb (just got it today) up to 12lb. Clear and green line both. Have'nt tried the 6 yet, but the others had more memory and were stiffer than Original Stren. Never used XT, but I wouldn't even try it after my experience with the "XL"

How often do you use it though? The more often you use fishing line, the limper it becomes.

Most of my lines are used around 2-3 times a week and the only one I have a problem with is my 8-lb. Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon, but that's because I haven't used it in about two weeks. After I break it in during a day of fishing, she's good to go.

Also, as bad as memory looks, it doesn't effect our lines much at all.

Try some Yo Zuri Ultra Soft. 6 lb. for spinning gear. 12 for baitcasters. Best Fluoro on the market. Great abrasion resistance. Fantastic feel. I use it for all my leader if I need to use any.

I have become a braid advocate personally.

I would give trilene a second chance. I use trilene on all of my reels, and if its not trilene its vanish. If you are fishing once a week for a month or so you have to change your line. Line takes alot of abuse even if your not catching fish. UV rays, hundreds of casts, improper storage, rubbing against structure and so on. Even with expensive mono or flouro lines, extensive use will weaken them only after a few trips. The people are Berkley know what they are doing and they wouldn't make a product they don't stand behind. To me berkley is the best fishing company there is.

quite playin with light line start at 12 pound test and more heavier..

imo trilene sucks PERIOD..when i spool up mono line it is either ande or cajun red. anything else is crap..

a 1/2 pound spool of ande premium mono sells for $17 at bps. there is 2000 yards of 12 pound test on that spool.. i burn thru 2 whole spools a year.
