Default Bait Fishing Setup

Hey Guys,

Lately, I've really felt the need to do some bait fishing. Mostly for carp, catfish, bowfin, but also some pike and musky this fall and next spring. I want to get a specific setup, but don't want to spend $400. I'm looking to spend around $150 or less on a reel and around $110-130 on a rod.

What would you reccommend? I was looking at a Shimano Cardiff for $110.00, (I think), and it looked pretty nice. I also saw some Shimano Corsair's and Calcutta's at our local tackle shop. What do you think of those.

Thanks again,

I think you are crazy. The money you waste could have paid for school. You got plenty of riggs to use. By the way BUZZ still waiting on those Salmon pics.

Moose,

As I posted elsewhere, the pictures were deleted by Bruce's, (the man I went to AK with), girlfriend.

Buzz, to tell you the truth, a fantastic bait rod is an Ugly Stik. Sure its not sensitive, but you really dont need sensitivity for baitfishing, well at least for the species you stated. Besides, it's cheap, indestructable(to a point) and wont break your heart when you snap it on a big hookset.

5ft ultralite, 6lb stren mono and a hook. Great fun for catfish. I hook half a hotdog bun on and watch them come up get it. I prefer using Kahle hooks with the barb cut off or bent down.

Seriously though: an AG Ambassaduer and an Ugly stik. It's live bait man. duct tape a reel to a friggin stick and you'll be fine.

I was thinking about the Ugly Stick to Jim. I saw some nice ones at Cabela's for under $40.00. I won't be using it that much, so I'm not going all out.

I think I might get a medium power rod and size 2000 or 2500 reel, just for kicks and giggles.

Thanks guys,

Thanks guys,
Wally World and Academy Sports have an Ugly Cat rod and reel combo for $18.99.

The rod is a 7' two piece and works well. I have one and use it just for catfish. The rod was strong enough for me to man handle a 5 lb cat to the dock the other night. I would suggest changing out the line that comes with the reel. I put 20 pound Suffix mono on it as soon as I got it home. The rod tip doesn't glow at night like they say it does and this was after I let the tip sit in the sunlight all day. I just attach a small glow stick to the end when fishing at night.

I got a great idea. Go to walmart and get some fingernail clippers.

Then take whichever setup you use least, and cut the lure off.

Rig it up with a bobber, split shot and a hook and walla! You stupid ****. You'll have a new bait fishing setup for about $1.95.

PS Buzz, did they have internet at the lodge in Alaska?

Wasn't a lodge. We stayed at Denver Copeland's house, pastor of Lighthougse Community Chruch in Nikiski, AK. Yes, hehad internet at his house. Google the church, and see if he's pastor. Is that proof enough I went to Alaska you little whining asses?

Yea, me and my priest are going on a hiking trip to patagonia next week, were going to try and catch some nice brown trout. I promise to take plenty of ictures.

Brushhog, good luck in the Amazon. Be sure to take plenty of bugspray!

Well at this point we've selected our 15 different rods and reels to take (each) and have spent approximately a grand each on tackle, not too mention clothing.

Unfortunately, with all this gear, I'm afraid we will not have room to pack a camera! Sorry fellas no pictures, although I feel certain many records will be broken!

Here's a picture from Alaska last year. The little island-looking-thingy is the Homer Spit, a type of jette fromed on the mouth of the Cook Inlet.
