Default Xmas ...

Well Xmas has come and gone for another year.
I hope you got everything that your heart desired.
As for myself...
I woke up with a hangover and in some strange girls bed...I hope I didn't get anything!!!

It really doesn't surprise me that someone who thinks to brag about having sex with someone they didn't even know on Christmas to a bunch of other people they don't even know would then call it "Xmas."

Actually, the X in Xmas is a much older abbreviation than many realize. The X was used to symbolize the cross. It is not an attempt to replace Christ with an x like variable.

WTL, I have had this debate with another member already, but here goes.

What you say is absolutely true. However, which do you think is more likely? That the average egalitarian atheist liberal is thinking "Greek letter Chi" when they say X-Mas, or "whew...almost said imaginary deity name there.."? It may have once been an academic issue, but these days, it is used as marketing tool to make our holiday more palatable to non-Christians, so they'll feel better about buying in excess.

I tend to go with Xmas pretty often when online. Just less letters to type.

Not a big fan of big business huh? Weird how they can use an issue about separating church and state to make money.

Its like presents on Christmas. Originally, Christmas was seen as a present in and of itself, as salvation is a gift. I suppose presents were originally given to reference that gift and also the magi who brought gifts.

After years and years of time, presents became more standardized and commercial, businesses developed around the practice of giving gifts, and the underlying spiritual message became less clear. That does not mean giving gifts is wrong though. Likewise, I don't think the abbreviation is wrong. The overarching spirit of commercialization is what should be assailed, and not petty examples like an abbreviation which most people use innocently.

Actually, I'm a huge fan of big business. I just don't like that fact that Christmas has been commandeered by business as an excuse to make money. If people want a gift-giving holiday, that's great. But the same people who roll their eyes at so-called "bible-thumpers" turn around and celebrate a completely secular Christmas. It's just intellectually dishonest, and very disrespectful to true believers.

As far as "petty" goes...I would never have made a big deal about it 99.99% of the time. I only brought it up because of the guy hoping we got presents in the same breath as getting wasted and contracting venereal diseases from sex with total strangers. My original gripe was that stuff...the "X-mas" thing was just a side issue.

It is disrespectful, everyone is entitled to believe in what they want to believe in in this country. People who criticize someone else because of beliefs are just ignorant, and probably do not have much respect for anyone at all.

An athiest is not someone who criticizes religion but someone who makes a personal choice to not believe in a higher power (somehow one means another for some).

Before I start ranting, I agree wholeheartedly with you NoFear, Christmas has been warped into something sinister compared to what it was originally meant for.
