Newbie --- looking for advice on buying new tin boat
All,
It is time to upgrade my Discovery Marine Explorer jon boat after 20 years of great service. However after a great amount of research I am at a loss for which boat to go with and I need to order asap. I want to use the boat for fishing lakes, ponds and rivers around New England. Want something small enough to easily tow, be able to fish the shallows but be fairly comfortable to fish from. I have narrowed the choice down to a Alumacraft MV1756AW SC, Yamaha F50TLR, Karavan Galvanized trailer, recently noticed a package price for a Pro 175 for approx the same money as the 1756. So first question is does anyone have any experience and/or opinions for these two boats? Another option is the Lowe Roughneck R1760 SC. Wondering how this one compares against the Alumacrafts? I know all the stats by heart so really looking for general info....on construction, comfort, layout, ect. Thanks in advance Tate Last edited by tate; 03-03-11 at 02:20 PM. |

The roughneck will serve you best.. I have 1655sc and it will jump over trees with no issue.. I fitted a Honda 35 Jet on the back. Top speed 32 mph. And 7 gallons for every 5 hours running WOT.
Go welded or bail water.. Capt Mike

Id say almost every company now has a line of cheaper riveted Jons, and a line of higher end welded Jons. I know Lowe Roughnecks and G3 Gator are two of the best made most respected tin boats around. Have you looked at the G3 1652SC? I like the hull design better on the G3 than the Lowe, but the Lowe has more storage...actually the fact that it has storage at all makes it better than most other tin boats.
Have you considered the RV160SC from Lowe? You get the better hull design, a real livewell, and a fair amount of dry storage. The RV series is my favorite aluminum boat hands down. When I move to TX, i want the RV170 Bay boat. |
