How important is a skeg for a trolling motor?
The skeg on my trolling motor is broken off close to the body of the propellor drive casing. I haven't noticed anything that feels "wrong" about the way the boat handles without it, but I'm wondering if I might be missing something. If I got a skeg repair kit, would there be a noticeable difference? The replacement kits are $30-$40 for a fin that mounts with a big hose clamp.
Just looking for opinions...thanks...

The skeg on a trolling motor, unlike that on a big outboard is primarily there to protect the motor housing and the blade from impact. It doesn't really affect it hydrodynamically.

Bryce knows more about this than me, but I have a very odd TM that is assembled from lose parts. Because of differences where the shaft connected to the motor, I believe I had a problem with losing control on full power, and after redoing the skeg it seems to have been improved.

Well now, WTL's got me there, with his Frankentroller.
The skeg can provide a bit of resistance to turning if it's far enough away from the axis of the shaft. However, you don't really want a trolling motor that's hard to turn, so they're mostly close to the shaft, from the factory. WTL's might be a more "exotic" design.
