Watertight seal question?
What do I need to do to make sure I have a good water tight seal when I screw wood, equipment, cleats, etc. onto my fiberglass boat?
I am trying to remember the material a guy told me to put in the screw hole prior to tightening the screws. I know the screws need to be stainless steel. Thanks |

100%pure silicone. Not siliconized caulk, but actual 100% silicone in a small tube. You can get a full size caulking tube, but it will go bad before you use it all unless you are using a bunch.

Another thing I do when I put screws in near or below the waterline is drill my hole and make sure that there is no water already in the hull (your drill shavings will tell you that), Then I mix a 15 minute two part epoxy, dab some on the hole and also on the screw when I put it in. It may only be pschycological (sp?) but I feel it not only seals the screw, hole and screw-head, but serves as a sort of "lock-tight" for that application.
