If you have loose loops on the spool, that will affect your casting. You want all the line to be taut when you're spooling up the reel so it will be nice and smooth when you cast. Also, be sure to stop the spool with your thumb AS SOON AS the lure hits the water.
Try this....turn the brakes on the reel up a lot. You won't be able to cast very far, but you'll be able to practice without getting backlashes. Once you get comfortable with high brakes, back them off gradually until you've got them low enough to make a good long cast. By then, your thumb will be well educated on feathering and stopping the spool.

Have you tried adjusting the breaks? What reel is it, and what kind of breaks are on it. That could help is a lot.

Bump the brakes up to 8 or even 10, and learn to cast with it that way. Your spool is turning faster than the lure is pulling line off, so it creates the slack that causes backlashes. Also, use a pretty heavy lure, at least 1/2 ounce+...that will help.

Check out this article I wrote: http://basschat.yuku.com/topic/8/How...itcasting-Reel
That should help you adjust the reel, although you can probably back off the brakes somewhat from what the article suggest for a beginner. You definitely need to get those loops out as they might not cause any problems on the next cast, but they will get worse until it's a bad backlash. BB

i agree with mississippiboy, tighten up the "thing" on the left side (brakes). and don't just SLING it, go slow and easy at first, gradually go up in the force oyu are throwing it. and remember, YOUR THUMB IS YOUR FRIEND.

Yeah put the thing on the side the highest it'll go. The Drag doesn't do anything to prevent backlashes. The tension knob however (placed below the drag star) does. Make sure so that you're lure falls slowly when the rod is straight out and the reel is in free spool.

If he's only experiencing slight overrun, there's no sense in turning the brakes to max. Moving them up to 4 or 5 should solve the problem if it is happening on 2.
