Yeah, I always called them "grinnel" as a kid. Odd, how our Encyclopedia Britannica didn't have an entry for them, as you know that was way before the internet.

I could be wrong on this one, but I've always thought that Bowfins and Dogfish are one and the same.
Sort of a Custodial Engineer/Janitor thing.
They do put up one heckuva fight

Good news. Turns out you should not be killing those bowfin at all!
"If any members of the Commission staff made comments about killing bowfin in the past, they were certainly not reflecting the views of our fisheries biologists."

I'm thinking the PA Fish Commission is trying to cover up some dirty laundry of the past!

Very possible. A lot of people around here pulle em up on the bank and stomp on their heads.
They're pretty much considered useless and eat so much of the baitfish that people wanna kill em off

Since we have such a dense population of them where I live, I've called them Bowfin, Grinnel, oh damn's, and peices of $H!7. The way I see it is that since so many bass and other speices are thinned out by harvesting, it's not going to make much of a difference if I do split a bowfin from gullet to butthole... Bowfin decimate the fingerling bass population and the few I catch and get rid of aren't going to affect the population as a whole.

He's referring to the Dogfish population. Not the bass population. I think

The while the bowfin may not be a trash fish, it does compete for territory with largemouth bass and since largemouth are heavily harvested and bowfin aren't, something needs to be done to thin out the population. Plus I had one destroy my LC Redemption Spinnerbait... and that just ain't cool.

Yeah....what a jerk that fish was to destroy a lure meant to fool fish into attacking it. Damn those stupid Bowfin...don't they know spinnerbaits are just for bass?

Had me for a minute there when I first started reading. I am glad there was a pic. We call them grennel or cypress bass down here. They do put up a heck of a fight though.

The fish wasn't a jerk for destroying a spinnerbait, but rather, having the gaul to destroy an expensive spinnerbait.

I for one have no problem when mudfish remember their place, but they have no business hitting $5+ spinnerbaits, dry flies, salmon flies or topwaters, and I am prepared, if elected guvanah of alubama, to remind the grinnel of its proper place with force if nessesarie.
