Default 3.23.06 Smallie report/Pics

I went to Lake Berryessa today with my Dad and a buddy. We got on the water about 7:15 or so. right off the bat we got fish in 30-40 ft of water on the dropshot. I had 6 in the first 4 hrs. Fishing wasnt fast and furious but the quality was there. All fish averaged about 2-2 1/2 lbs. All fiesty as heck too. Through out the day we caught 34 smallies and spots. My buddy caught 18 me 12 and dad well he didnt do as well....he ended up with like 4-5. I did get 1 smallie that was 3.36lbs(pretty decent for a smallie around here). The spots were reallyin a bad mood today. We caught them on senkos in 8-12 ft of water. These guys fought 2 times harder than any of the smallies. Was a great day to be out with my Dad !!!

Good job, Deacon! Looks like you had a great day on the water. That's the kind of day that keeps you coming back when you get skunked!

Deacon, nice Smallie in my book. No matter where your from. What do you use on your drop shot rig as the bait? Also have you used what we call a cheater rig? It's a drop shot rig, but you use a jig as the weight. Seen it pay off a couple of times. Keep your eyes peeled for those jigs and buzzbait. I'm gonna try to shoot those your way this weekend via UPS.

Thanks Flip...lookin forward to it! I have heard of the cheater rig...we call it the jigshot. Ive tried it a couple times bot it doesnt feel right to me. Dunno think its just preference.

For me there is only 1 dropshot bait. Roboworms!!!! For smallies prefer(if water is clear) In the mornin I throw Morning Dawn w/chart. BTW everything I throw for smallies has Chartruese in it. I Once the sun is up I use Salt&Pepper, Aarons Magig, Bold Bluegill and Junebug all w/chart. Prizsm Shad is a great color to(my personal fav for smallies. LMB and smallies will hit Prizsm shad. Out here for LMB(say at Clear Lake) Margarita Mutilator is by far the best producer. The reason I like them so much is its a small floating with great color selection.

My gear set up is a 7ft med action spinner. I have the pfluger president reel. I fill the spool with 95% 15lb(6lb diameter) Power Pro. I then tie 20 ft or so Pline Floro. Iuse a double uni knot to tie them together and a drop of super glue to the knot to ensure a slip free knot. I prefer a 3/8 oz dropshot weigth all the time. I like the way it feels in shallow(under 15 ft) and it get me down to the depths(20+ ft) pretty quick. I throw a dropshot in as shallow as 5 ft to depths of 50ft. Dont think that it is a deep water bait. Dropshotting is a very versitle bait. For those who dont Dropshot yet....you guys should give it a try!!!

Nice fish Deacon. Berryessa is as pretty as ever. It doesn't look like it was to bad to be out there.

Nice fish, keep the pics coming, love to see those smallies. And fishing with dad is the best, hope to keep fishing with my dad for another 40 years.(that would put him in the 100's)
