Default Reel repair

A buddy of mine asked me to look at a Quantum baitcaster reel for him. This is a lower end model and from what I could tell, he had submerged it at some point. I got it all apart and back together. Everything is greased and it appears to be working well now, except. The line guide sticks on the right hand side. It does not do it consistantly, but often enough to be a nuissance. It is acting as though it is jumping out of the grooves, but I can not be sure. Neither the pin nor the grooved bar show any signs of wear. I did have to get some rust off of both, but they look fine now.
Maybe I am over looking something simple. (Yes, I put the cap back on to hold the pin in place)

Any suggestions?

Most likely you need to replace the level-wind pawl. It's the little thingie under that cap that engages the level-wind worm gear. If not kept well-lubed or if they ingest grit they wear down.
You can order the part (get a spare cap too!!!) from Quantum. Call them...have credit card ready.

Thanks lancer. Closer inspection shows that the worm gear is in fact worn on the right side tip. At least now I can tell him which part to order.

You say worm gear is worn or levelwind pawls is worn ? if the worm gear is worn then he has to order both parts.

Honest question - Is it bad to dunk your rod and reel in the water to wet the line before fishing?

I'd shy away from ever getting a high end reel dunked in the drink..it kinda sorta used to work on the ol zebco 202's or even a 33, back in the day.

Ditto. Don't know anything about a Quantum but when my Abu Garcias do as you describe, it's time to replace the pawl. I keep a pill bottle with a half dozen or so pawls in them.

I told the guy to go and buy a new reel. This one is an older low end quantum with a plastic line guide. I doubt he could buy the same reel anywhere, but could get a better one for cheap.
