Default This weekend - Cooter's Pond

Well I was able to get out this weekend and go fishing. I went Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Friday night I tried to fish all along the west bank of the lake but with no success. Made my way towards the golf course but it started to get dark so I headed back to the boat dock. I fish a small cove near the boat dock and landed a nice little pounder (maybe 1.25 lbs). Called it a night due to darkness and almost getting hit by a falling tree - stupid beavers!!!

Sunday afternoon, I decided to skip fishing the west bank and go straight for the vertical trees in the middle of the lake. I cast a couple of times and quickly realized I had no clue how to fish this area. Since I wanted to fish the pads at the golf course cove, I didn't waste too much time at the vertical trees. I got back into the cove which is very long and wide with TONS of lily pads. I found a nice little spot and drove my little boat straight into the pads since the bite was not happening on the edges. I landed a small dink at first. Then I switched to dark lizard (I didn't have any frogs with me ). I slowly pulled the lizard across the pads and over the open water areas and had 2 big blow ups. One was at least a 2 pounder that I lost because I couldn't pull him out fast enough. The second was at least a 3 pounder that again I couldn't pull out of the thick stuff. Sigh.

The whole afternoon, I was hearing and seeing blowups at the surface all over the pad area I was in. I will have to remember to take a picture of the area next time so you can see what kind of "pad heaven" I am in. After Christmas, I plan on having video, since my gift to myself will be the hatcam.

I will post a few pics when I get home. Next trip out there I will definitely head straight to the lily pads with my baitcaster, 50 lb braid, and my frogs. I don't plan on losing any with that setup.

You might not need a frog if they are busting the lizard. My buddy won't throw a frog when I do but he holds his own. He probably does a little better as far as quantity goes on a weightless liz.

My setup that I had Sunday afternoon was not ideal for fishing heavy lily pads which is why I lost the 2 keepers. I am looking at an Ambasseduer baitcaster and 7' M to MH with fast tip for my frog fishing setup.

Well, not too bad! But better luck next time!

I'm sure you're gonna get bit them frogs pretty good next time, them things work better than lizards IMO in the pad, but try both! And the Ambassador you're talking about, is that the $80, open face one?

I was thinking about that one but I don't like the way it sits in my hand. The screw thing hits my hand funny because of the way I like to hold the reel. I am thinking about getting a combo setup for $70 - Bill Dance has a 7' MH rod with fast tip combined with a Quantum reel - here it is at BPS.

haha, ya, that was my first bait caster! Not to good of a combo. I used it for a year than than it conked out, second year it started being REALLY loud, and not smooth at all, but it cast just fine, it was just noisy! After 2 and a half years it just broke, it won't reel or anything. Kind of a bummer! How much do you wanna spend on a reel?

p.s., how about we talking about this over PM, don't wanna get off topic.

We can stray off topic. I started another thread with the pics for the weekend.

I would like to spend no more than $100 for the reel.

If I come into $175 before Christmas, you will see the videos really soon. I may give myself an EARLY Christmas gift at the end of this month. Idk. I have to stick to my guns about no more credit cards. If the money is not in the bank, then I don't buy it.
