Guess The Weight
I have often been fooled by the weight of a bass. I know, I know, we can't help but exaggerate if we don't put the bass on a scale or shoot a photo I have a friend who fishes every weekend but will not allow a camera or scale in his boat. Yet he is always telling me about how many he catches and how much the biggest one weighed. He is not as successful when I take him in my boat. Photos taken at different angles, the belly on a bass, and how we hold the bass can add or subtract pounds when we attempt to guess the weight. I would like to invite everyone to guess the weight of this bass I'm holding . . . not a contest just a fun exercise.

I always look at the hands holding the fish. Standard human measurements for art work: your hand, "heel to finger tip" is the same as the distance from your chin to the top of your forehead.
Based on the size of your hands, the fish is about 12 inches closer to the camera than it would be if held tight to you. That makes the fish is about 20 inches long. About 7 inches top to bottom. My guess ... 5.5 pounds. |

Good for you for jumping right in and explaining your educated guess. We needed a bell cow. I'll now wait while hoping we can get a few more guesses before revealing what she topped my digital scale at.

I used a real rudimentary method to try and determine length and girth. I used pupillary distance, most adults fall somewhere between 60-65MM. I just used some averages, I am going to say this girl was just on the heavy side of 10lbs.

Great guesses. Thanks guys for participating. This is not a power play but I do want to wait a few more days for the stragglers to take a guess. I'll post the true weight by Friday.

I would like to thank all you guys for taking a guess on the bass' weight. It's good to see the participation on the Forum. We had 11 guesses and they ranged from 5.5 to 10+. The bass weighed 8.1 pounds. Thanks again.

LOL well, we now know who to trust when they say, "I caught one that weighed [insert weight]."
Some of you will be required to have photographic proof, with the fish on a certified scale from now on! |

A picture is worth 1,000 words and sometimes can add a pound or two
