With the modern reproductions that are available now days, there really is no reason to ever take the real thing to a taxidermist anymore.....just take photos of the fish, and take length and girth measurements.....from that any taxidermist can provide you a wall mount worthy of showin off to all your buddies....Plus you have the satisfaction of knowing you released that big bass to be caught again someday.

I will say this.....when I began bass fishin years ago, I said if I caught one over 5 i'd mount it....then I did, but I didn't mount it.....I released it and said i'd mount one over 6.....caught that too several minutes later.....released it too and said "ok, just make it over 8lbs"....lol......haven't caught another bass over 6 since....haven't caught another one over 5 either. But I have seen enough of the reproductions to know i'll use them and release the fish whenever I do.

i would get the atrificial mounts done, like the bps wild life creations.
they are a little more expensive, but it looks better and you dont kill any fish

It'd have to be at least 5 lbs. And like stated above, I'd never get a skin mount. I'd take measurements, lots of pics and have a replica made. It'll last longer and your fish gets to live to fight another day.

I'm with you guys on returning a 5 lb'er. But to paraphrase what WTL said in another thread, a 10lb bass is an old bass (at least for a Northern strain). Releasing that bass is kinda like giving a life sentence to a 90 yr old criminal. It's gonna die soon anyway. For any fish I would want to mount, I'd do the skin mount so I would have "the" fish I caught, not just something that looks like it.

I rounded off and put 5lbs but the truth is it would have to be 7 or more. I'd mount that one just to have one that was actually big enough to mount, and to rub the nose of a novice I once took fishing all over it. Still can't believe I took that turkey that hadn't benn fishing more than 3 times in his life to the pond I'd been fishing for years. Never pulled anything bigger than 3 lbs out of it. But it's one of those places you just know there's some monsters in. Fool was too scared to get in the boat, and he catches a 6 and a half pounder dropping his worm in and out of the water from the bank. That haunts me everytime I see that thing hanging on his wall.

After that I'd go with pics and replicas unless there was something really special attatched to the memory of catching it. Trust me, I the fish are safe from extinction from me catching anything that big.

6 or 7lbs, I've caught so many 5lbers that it's not that big of a deal anymore, but I might!

I'm sure my brothers can relate to how you felt. But at least they deserved it.

my 10lber, is a no brainer.

but i had said not two weeks before, that if i caught one 6 or better this year, it would get mounted.

and i still stand by that. although i have a big one, i'd like to have some smaller ones, less special to me.

I went with 15 or greater. I would not do a mount, but a replica.

well i caught a 9 3/4 many, many moons ago. ate it...... ok no remarks. i was young and hungry alright? anyway, i said 10 pounds or over, and would most likely get the reproduction. now my wife on the other hand is a totatly different story. over 5 for her. she is STILL MAD at me for throwing back the biggest she has caught to date, 3#8 oz. she wanted it mounted. i said when she got one 5 or more we would mount it for her.

now if i lived in cal like cass. i would think about 15 or more cause they grow em huge out there. tofu bass, lmao.

yeah, in cali, 15, psh thats a decent mounting size. in SC, 15 is DANG you should put somethin in his mouth and make him a little bit more for the record.
