After retaining the services of a translator from the Defense Language Institute...

The name "Coon Perch" refers (I hope!) to Yellow Perch, alluding to the vertical bars on their sides. "White Perch" is sometimes used when referring to Crappie (Krah-pee) and THEY are Sunfishes while Yellow Perch are true Perches...as are Sauger, Walleye, Saugeye, and for all I know; Cottoneyed Joes.
Why not do an internet search under "Coon Perch" and, if it doesn't come up as "A chair in the Oval...." never mind....you might learn all you need to know, including distribution ("where dey is at."), behavior (including how dey spawns and makes babies!) and feeding habits.

Fishing for perch is one of the rare occasions that I use live bait.
I prefer tossing out pretty much any kind of minnow under a bobber. Some of the most relaxing fishing I've ever done was wading out as far as my hip boots would take me, and tossing minnows at lily pads. Caught a lot of perch that way.
Use the lightest set up you have

If you are talking about white perch (freshwater drum) then I'd suggest you use live bait on the bottom. They are mostly bottom feeders.

Do lots of fishing for yellow perch, or just perch as they're called up north (Cause we know the difference between perch and bluegill, while anything that aint a bass or a catfish down south is bream or perch. lol ) Anyways, live minners should do the trick. They're hard to find, but Mustad Central Draught hooks are great live bait hooks. Under a slip popper works great for them during spawn.

Just thought I'd throw this in. Perch fishing on Lake Michigan here is really big, as are the perch you catch there. One bait that is used a lot up here is the small frozen popcorn shrimp you can get at the grociery store.

Never heard of that before. How do you fish it?

The guys up here simply use a slip bobber setup, toss it out and let it settle and wait. Occationally they give the rod a little tug or two.

Oh yeah! The Freshwater Drum...AKA Gaspergou.
You referred to them as bottom feeders. How dare you equate the noble 'gou to Liberals 'n Lawyers!

I use the in-fisherman perch rig, its a double hook rig with about a foot of leader off the main line two feet up, both rigged with berkly gulp alive grubs, I use one white and one chartreuse and vertically jig it.

I ran into a guy on a lake yesterday that told me a spot (different lake) to get 15" perch.
About an hour from here. Worth the drive at twice the mileage!

Hey all. I'm new here. I live about 20 minutes from Lake Erie and grew up fishing for perch and walleye like no one's business.. I actually haven't really taken the time to fish but decided this was going to be my year to get back into it. Already learned a lot and I just wanted to spread a bit of knowledge for perch.

The fish he was catching were croppie (sp) and bluegill/sunfish. They were a larger breed or just some weird radioactive ones but nice fishing.

Now as for perch up here they look like the following link.
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...num=1&ct=image

Now you might not always find them so pretty but that's the general idea. As for bait and fishing we normally go up during spawning time and use a spreader. Not sure if ya bassers know what i mean by that. (As I said born again newbie to bassing. Are these below. Now there are a lot of variation but it allows you to throw two hooks with two baits on and go to town. You usually use minnows. They kill them on a good day when I was younger we would pull in a couple hundred with 4 or 5 people on the boat. I think the limit was 40 or 50 back then..

By the way. Hello everyone. I'm Bear from Northwest Ohio. Any tips are great tomorrow I am going out all day with some of the worm rigs and checking it out. Slowly but surely I'll learn myself. *wink*
