Maybe 25 or 30 years ago I saw a TV show where a guy was catching smallmouth using a Road-Runner; basically the same thing as the under-spin jig in the video. It might have been the Babe Winkleman show, though I'm not 100% sure. He was fishing smallmouth a river in Iowa, which got me excited since growing up I primariy fished for smallmouth in a small Iowa river. it was one of the few times I remember seeing fishing on TV that directly applied to how I fiehs. Of course I went out and bought a bunch, though for some reason I don't ever remember using them for river smallmouth.
The ones I bought had hair on the back instead of a plastic grub. I would tip them with a night crawler when I was in college and could get largemouth to bite when they wouldn't hit anything else. I've also caught a few small walleye using a roadrunner tipped with a crawler. This spring I'm planning a smallmouth trip to Okoboji in NW Iowa and I think I'll give the underspin jigs a try. Thanks for the video!

Like Kirk, I've caught more walleye than smallmouth (and only runt largemouth) with Roadrunners. I haven't watched that video for several months, but if I'm remembering correctly, he had a larger plastic bait attached to the jighead. I think the plastic bait had more influence than the blade.

Roadrunners I use frequently and in fact Smitty's hunting down my trailers I want now.
Roadrunners have a 'horsehead jig' too. Yes I think the 'REINS rockvibe shad' is probably a lot of the reason but it's NO 'TWIDDLE TAIL! But I like most, fish them at like a 4-6' depth. Not bouncing off the bottom.

I did a search to compare the different underspin jigheads and was impressed by the design of this one by Blakemore. It looks perfect for staying down in the strike zone when fishing deep structure.

No luck on the "Twiddle tails" on my end. Big crappie bait retailer wasn't at the Richmond Expo. He would have had them. Still looking though.
Client of mine catches big smallies (5-7lbs) in 25'+ range. He uses tubes and 1/4 oz jig heads but I like how that bait runs along the bottom. I think I'd use something that looked a little more like a perch or baitfish than the worm he's using in the video. |

My guess Dale Hollow or Cumberland averageangler not used to it would have trouble getting a 2lber in clear water,I gave up on smallies and went spot fishing. One can use same as elsewhere in creeks as there is color to that water.Creature baits on a crig saved my trip to cumberland, nothing to brag about no 5lb upwards.
My personal best smallie is 4 lb 8 oz out of the ohio river actually in a T out of Huntington ,W.Va,won 879 dollars with that one fish.4th place and bf. Gotta make a trip back there soon so expect an ohio entry into the bf contest as I dont go anywhere without my fishing pole or cc pistols anymore. |
