baitcast reels
I recently got a new baitcast reel. It's set for 6:4:1. I understand that the 6 represents how many times the spool rotates for each turn of the reel. I don't quite understand the whole picture though. What kind of reel would you want for:
spinnerbaits: crankbaits: plastics: ETC? From what I understand that the higher your ratio the faster you can reel the fish in. I guess this would benefit people who use soft plastics in cover who need to pull the fish out fast and to the boat before the hook might come out of it's mouth? |

It's actually 6.4 revolutions for every 1 turn of the handle. That's a good ratio for most fishing, excluding using big crankbaits like DD22's or something like that. The big bill needed to get those cranks down to their running depth will wear you out on a fast reel. It's much easier with a 5.3:1 reel.
6.4 will work for most anything, but if you need to slow down........reel slower. The higher speed reels will let you pull a fish out of cover quickly, take up slack for a hookset, and keep the line tight while fighting a fish. Welcome to the site. |

Like ssissippi said, 6.3:1 means that the spool turns 6.1 times every time you make a complete rotation with the handle.
I've never had a BC reel under that.... it's ideal for most bass fishing, spinners, medium cranks, top waters, jigs, plastics, jerk baits, frogs, flukes, etc. The only reason I would have a 7.2:1 is if I was fishing frogs in super heavy cover, and jigs in super heavy cover. And the only reason I would have a reel 5.3:1 or under, is for DD15's or deeper. Otherwise, you're good to go!

Welcome aboard Pacman! That pretty much explains it concerning the BC reels.
Now what about those rods. ~Mark |

6.3:1 is a great all round gear ration. The only thing I would use that for is if I was using frogs or jig in super heavy cover.
Good luck, and good fishing!

Yep everyone got it covered.
What I like: Crankbaits - shallow 6.2 to burner, medium 5.2, deep 4.7 to 5.2 Spinnerbaits - shallow to deep 5.2 to burner Topwater - 6.2 to burner Plastic - 6.2 to burner Jigs - 6.2 to burner I know it has nothing to do with OP's question. Thought I'd throw that out. Welcome aboard Pac. |

These are my setups
Carolina rig: Revo 6.4 to 1 Jig/Frog : Revo 7.1 to 1 Crankbait: Revo Winch 5.4 to 1 Spinnerbait/topwater: Revo 6.4 to 1 Worm rod: Revo 6.4 to 1 That's what I like. I'd like to get one more Revo in 7.1 to 1 for lipless crankbaits, that'll wait till a couple tournaments from now

you can use that reel for almost anything.....I would recommend it for crankbaits and buzzbaits.
