Default Novice's first attempt at a real spinning set up:

Skeet Reese Tessera Rod - 7'2" MH Fast. Pflueger Supreme reel. I plan to put some 10 lb flouro on it. Will be my jig and plastics rod. Not crazy about the yellow as far as stick color but I guess it matters not. Rod feels good as does trying out the reel sans line. Friday will be its first test run - calling in slick as the Birmingham snow is giving way to mid 50's and sun.

Is my thinking on this rod and reel correct for the application?

I can't say for sure about the rod, but I think you've picked one of the better spinning reels on the market, and definately best in its price range.

Let us know how you like them both.

Sounds like a nice setup... in my case the yellow will look real pretty as my wife or daughter drops it in the water lol (a main reason why I stick with cheaper equipment)

Not to be a dampner, but flouro just about makes me cuss on a spinning reel. But it is probably just me. Nice sounding set up though. Better find some glasses to help dull the glare off of that yellow light saber.

I hear that if you have a 2500 spinning reel or higher, you should be fine... What size reel is it Callin?

Its an 8040. Seems kind of big. To tell you the truth, I never even looked to see when I bought it. I had read that this reel was a good one for the price but never thought to check the size.

With the 8040 you should be fine with 8 lb fluorocarbon. I used the same test on my supreme 8035 towards the end of the last season without any problems. The pflueger supreme 8040 is equivalent to about a normal 2500 reel. I think you'll be fine with 8lb fluoro.

Let me know how you like the rod.
I wouldn't mind trying one out myself.

Hmmm.. If you're going to use 10# fc line, you might have issues with line falling off the spool. To compensate, I would suggest a reel that will allow you to change the line lay configuration of the spool. Shimano reels like the symetre can do this.

If you're cover allows for it, you might want to consider 8# fc. It's probably going to break closer to 11 or 12# test anyway. Just a thought. Using a limper fc could help too. Remember that not all fc lines are the same in this department. The stiffer the fc line is, the greater its potential to give you grief at 10# on a spinning reel.

IB's definately right. The stiffer the FC, the more headaches you're going to have on a spinning reel. But the stiffer the line, the more abrasion resistant (generally). Like he said, if you can get away with 8lb, you'll be fine.

Like I mentioned before, I used 8lb Seaguar Carbon Pro on my Supreme 8035 this summer without any problems. I used the carbon pro because I had it laying around, but I'd definately recommend Seaguar InvisX.

You're gonna love that reel. I'm at the point where I probably won't buy any other spinning reel
