What revolutionized your fishing?
I got this thread from another forum so I won't claim that it is original. That being said, it was a good conversation. What changed your fishing the most.
For me it is 4 items. Frogs. Hollow bodied frogs changed how I view areas. Places where I never considered casting before now are opportunities. Braid: For much the same reason as frogs. I can not cast into areas where mono was not an option. Senkos: I still don't know how they work, but they sure do. Drop Shotting: While it is not my favorate way to fish I can not argue with its ability to catch fish.

I would say the two biggest differences in my fishing gameplan now vs. 18 months ago would be:
Boat - 'Nuff said. Electronics - My move to nice electronics has changed things a lot for me, but honestly hasn't put a lot of fish in the boat yet. I'm still trying to learn how to apply them better. Baitcasting Reels - Obviously a big change for me, but one I have taken to wholeheartedly. Jigs - I never caught a fish on a jig before last summer. Now I love them.

My biggest one of all time was when it clicked in my head that bold bright colors might be great on heavily fished lakes. But that stuff normally won't work in the farm ponds I fish that don't get fished too much. In the ponds I need more natural colors like off white, black or pumpkin seed.

Having my own boat - I can go when I want to where I want and I control who, if anyone, goes with me (THAT'S A BIGGIE. LOL)
GPS - I wasn't confortable fishing large unknow lakes before GPS, I can get lost in my own town and it makes finding my way back to areas I want to fish, much easier. With the advent of electronic charts it's also easier (and safer) viewing the GPS screen rather than holding a chart. "Premium" rods/reels - you can catch a fish with a stick and string, but I love good, quality rods and reels. They make my day much more enjoyable, and put less wear & tear on my arthritic joints. I used inexpensive equipment when I started out, I went the upgrade route every few years until finally biting the bullet and invested is quality. It would have cost me less money in the end if I just would have done it "right" the first time. The newer fishing lines, including copolymer, braid and now I'm trying flurocarbon. I don't use mono anymore - and it was ALL I used just a few years ago. |

I would say the 2 things that revolutionized my fishing the most would be switching from spincast to baitcast when I was 12 or so and learning to use soft plastics. I've learned many techniques and used a lot of new equipment since then but those 2 things changed it all for me.
Great topic! |

Well, using a bait caster I guess! Things would have prolly gone lots differently for me if I never got one and stayed with it!

I'm a slow learner and just picked up a Spinnerbait last year for the first time.
I would have to go with that first, simply because of the amount of fish I've caught on 'em. The 2nd would definitely be frogs. Instead of throwin near the Lily pads when they're hidin out, I'm in the thick of it. Now if I could just get my hook-up ratio above 10% lol

I'd have to say baitcasters as well. In my younger years (probably up til the time I was 16) I was constantly getting frustrated with trying to use light line with jigs and buzzbaits because I'd bust them off in a tree or grass. Once I started throwing 12 and 14 lb test, my success rate went way up. I also figured out how much more accurate I could cast, in a variety of angles.

Short answer: Worms.
I have never caught a fish in my life on a plastic worm until this spring. Now I can hardly not catch at least one on a given trip. I am now a true believer. And the ones that did it for me, you ask? Creme worms, in the natural nightcrawler. I am branching out to more worm colors, styles, and brands, but the cremes remain my biggest producers.
