spoonbill
Got to make a trip to a river a couple of hours away. This river is known for haveing spoonbill this time of year, they make a run up river to their spawning grounds. We caught 11 fish altogether with this one being the biggest at just over 50lbs. She put up a great fight, and was released to finish her job. Sorry about the crappy picture, all I had was my camera phone.

Great fish, man!!! And /salute to you for returning her to her river home. Spoonbills are sort of a national treasure. An oddity for sure.

Technique
Spoonbill are plankton type eaters, the only way I know of fishing for them is to snag them. You basically use about a 4oz weight and a 8/0 barbless trebble hook and drag it through the water with a very large rod and reel. It is a great workout. |

That's what i thought, saw a episode of "In Fisherman" where they went snagging for spoonbill. Looked like a crazy fight!

Thank you, by the way alll the fish we caught were released, they are a very very good fish to eat, but it seems unfair to keep them while they are spawning. And I agree with a natural treasure, very cool fish indeed. |

very tuff

They are related to the shark, and they have no quit in them, once they get into the current of the river they can be very difficult to turn around, definately one of the better fighting fish I have ever had the pleasure of catching. |
