Fly rod patterns for Bass
What do you use stimulator ,goofus bug or say a Dahlburg diver?
Ive caught some nice fish on dahlburg divers not all of them black bass, some white, stripers and one rather large muskie. For those who are not familiar with the pattern basic spun deer hair with a collar the collar actually lets it shallow dive, when popped surface its a rather large commotion. It can however be tied smaller so less agressive fish will hit. Flouresent yellow was my favorite along with a lime or chart.about a 2/0. After that not the stimulator but a large goofus bug.Its also easy tie a mono loop weed guard on when tying, can be used around and in things a tad better. My 8=9 weight is kaput so now when delving into the past have to use an old 7 weight. And while I have several normal reels I generally use my dads perrine automatic. |

I generally use foam body poppers. Bluegill size poppers can make a lot of noise on the surface, and big bass will sip small baits. My largest bass on a fly rod (6+ pounds) came on a bluegill popper.
I've also gotten into sinking flies recently, but I am mostly targeting sunfish when fly rodding. |

Lol the captain has a fair supply of dahlburgs, another to emulate in nature however is the hexagenia or hex mayfly its hatching now on the ohio river,a rather large mayfly.
Mikechell tie a large wholly bugger on a longshank hook it will catch just about everything, and is subsurface.Streamer patterns will also work. I miust admit I have a love affair with spun deer hair, have even tied a 16 royal coachman with it.Prior to my hand injury, cannot tie much anymore get severe cramps, but love to see others work. |

That little foam bettle at the top of the page is also an easy tie with deer hair called a goofus bug size16 in flouresent yellow has caught many a trout for me in tailwaters. It doesnt get waterlogged and floats like a cork as deer body hair is hollow.
I learned to tie on my own and reading every book marshall university and cabell county library had, would tie a pattern till it looked just like the one in the book, even if not a popular fly. Then learned messenger style-spinning deer hair and at my height taught boy scout classes locally,on how to tie.Im afraid im way out of practice, yet your thread or mention about fly fishing brought this out-sort of reminiscing.
