My first ever tourney @ Greenwood Lake (pics)
Well folks, today was my first ever fishing tournament I was real excited last night... slept at 1 and woke up at 4 to get ready. anyhow, as i drove out to greenwood, it started pouring and i was ANGRY. Seems like whenever i have a big fishing day planned, nature has other ideas. Anyhow, when I got there, the rain was dying down and we got onto the boats. I was boating with this one other kid... he was an obnoxious twerp, but hell, can't have everything work out, can we?
The guy asked where we wanted to fish, and i rattled out some suggestions bassintom and 1fastlaser had given me (thanks, by the way). The other kid wanted to fish the docks on the New York side, and since all the spots are so close to each other, we went there first. Started the day on a red shad worm on a slider hook, but somehow i got hung up and the hook broke in two. This was an owner hook... not some cheapo or anything. I was surprised to say the least. Anyhow, after that I switched to a pop-r but had no luck on that. it was about 10 o clock, and i switched to the red shad worms again. Bang, my first tourney fish, caught with the worm bounced off the edge of the little concrete wall type thing. Then we went a little further down, to Derek Jeter's house (my god that thing is NICE!) and ran into a school of little bass. literally every cast I had one. We decided to stop screwing around there, and started fishing docks by the airplane hangar, when i got my second fish. It was a smallie that just about made the size limit. After that we tried fishing around a marina, but nothin happening there, we went to the dam. Over there, i hooked into a big fish under a tree, musta been 2 or 3 pounds, but it spit the hook about 5 feet from the boat... bummer. Anyway, pics totaled out at 3.51, good for 4th out of 15... but ofcourse no recognition for fourth... maybe next time even so... the true measurement of fishing success one bassthum up

That's good for your first tourney Cranky! Congrats and wtg! Did you pre-fish it any or just jump on it at the tourney? I know a lot of guys that don't get a fish to fry much less weigh in their tourneys.

Haha thanks guys... it really was a blast. Man i need to get me a bassboat... i didn't get to pre-fish at all since i am busy as anything this summer and that lake is an hour n a half away. Was going to try to get some practice in on hooksets at a nearby pond yesterday, but it poured. And yeah, red shad is one hell of a color. On the phone with tom, I asked what color powerworm he had been using... then i felt stupid for not knowing the answer to that already, haha.
Now that i look back... damn I been here a while and progressed a ton. I'da been happy with those little bass fry back when i started, haha

Haha... thanks a lot guys, seriously, you don't know how much it means to me. worked real hard for that. And I'll always continue to work hard in everything i do... I'll sometimes sit back and realize how much i have ahead of me... another year of HS, 3 or 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school, internships, residency, fellowships, specialization. phew. Haven't had one of those token "kid" summers in 3 years. thank god for fishing and breaks from all of this. Hope it all works out well in the end... preferably with a nice 20' boat
P.S. Mallen, I got that shirt from JC Penny... talk about big sponsor, huh?

10 bucks... i think i have like 2 or 3 fishing shirts from them. It's a tradition- when fishing, wear a fishing shirt.

Just remember your long lost uncle Donald who will be looking for big time sponsorships from a doctor around the same time you become one. I don't mind fishing out of a Triton boat with a Dr. Crankybait Logo on it. lol. Good job

Haha surely... no better way to advertise patient care than boats out in the middle of water, right? I'd get tons of people looking to get hooks pulled from thumbs/faces/other body parts XD

cranky,
usually the body gets such an adrenaline rush before or during the tourney that soon afterwards when you get home either that night or next day you'll be drained and sleep solid. |
