Crap Thats a Big Crappie

Was out at my favorite local pond and threw out my normal 4 inch Senko on 3/0 wide gap hook. Got a few decent bass and then moved to my favorite spot. Proceeded to cast out and before the Senko even hit bottom I felt a THUMP and set the hook. Started peeling drag and the fight was on. I got her about 5 feet from shore when she jumped and all I saw was a flash of silver. I thought to myself....Silver, bass aren't silver.....Holy Crap its a Crappie!!!! Got her ashore and proceeded to almost crap myself at the size of her. My biggest Crappie before this was 9 inches and this one by my rough estimate was 14+ but I forgot to do girth. I was tempted to bring this one home with me but I am 100% catch and release so back into the water she went. I'm just glad my buddy was there with me to witness and photograph me.

Any guesses on weight? She fought like hell and based on previous bass I have weighed and felt, she felt like 2 almost 3 pounds but I could be wrong.

The thing that blew my mind on this one was it was Bass dimensions not Crappie dimensions. Meaning it was thick completely throughout the belly not round like a normal Crappie.

Hey, nice crappie!

Our biggest so far this year was 12.5" and it weighed 1lb 7oz on our scale. By the "length only" conversion chart I have, a 14" crappie would be approximately 2.2 lbs. Seems like 2.0-2.5 lbs would be right in the ballpark for weight on yours.

That is a nice crappie. Big one too , I dont think ive seen one that big.

I was gonna say 2 to 2.25 lbs if it was belly fat. Beautiful fish. Black crappie always look prettier to me than whites. That fish would almost enough to make me put down my bass rod for a while.

Not to top you, but right after I read this the first time, I heard someone at Patoka caught a 17" Crappie last weekend. Hopefully, they will post pics as good as yours.

That's a slab! Congrats. I would say it will go 2 lbs +. They are really good eating too!!!

i saw one once that was a total monster slab... like 16 plus inches...... i think like 17 or something. its a thrill to catch a nice crappie.

That is one big crappie!
I just found out the other day that 13" crappies are caught fairly regularly in Lake Manistee, about 45 minutes from me.
I really need to go get me some!

i caught a huge one at this pond like a month ago and i didnt realize it wasnt a bass til i flipped it into the johnboat, i caught it after catchin 2 bass back to back on a rattle-trap ... and it fought and hit it like a bass

That is a nice one Pan. I think the only difference between a bass and a crappie angler is that they use all their poles as once.

This thread inspired me! Talked to a couple guys at work today who've fished Lake Manistee before. We're gonna head out on my buddy's pontoon boat and see if we can have a really crappie day!
