There is a video you can buy at Bass Pro called Pitchin' to Heavy Hitters with Kevin VanDam. I highly recommend anyone new to these two techniques to buy this video. I found it very helpful when I started lerning these casting methods.

Thanx for the replies!
Over here in Australia casting is just that "casting" no real method to it. Accuracy (lure placement) tends to be more important then how the lure is getting there. I've been fishing for years but only started targeting bass 2 years ago with plenty of success however I've hit the wall so to speak with no fish over the last few trips. What worked for me then isnt working any more so it was time to go back to basics and learn some new tricks like "casting" thats why I asked. After watching ESPN bass classic broadcast here yeaterday I thought there would be no better place to ask my questions then to ask the guy's over in the states. You guys have the best bass fishing scene and really know your stuff when it comes to bass. Sure theres a fair bit of difference between the bass over there and the one's over here but I'm sure some of the methods you guy's use would be the undoing of many bass here. I'm gunna pick ya brains for tips and tricks! hope ya dont mind!!!!

cheers

Once you find a good instructional video on how to flips and pitch, go out side with you rod and reel, tie a jig to it. Once you get that done, go inside and get a cup! Bary it in the ground so just the brim of the cut is above ground. Than try to pitch/flip into the cup. Do that till your arm is so tired you can hold you rod and reel. Go back inside rest your arm and than go back out and do it some more.

I no it sound imposable but you'll be able to do it 2 out of 10 times, by the second time out.

Hope this helps,

~SJ

Welcome to the forum!

Here is an illustration that shows the concept real well.

Pitching:

Flipping:

Pitching is essentially an underhand cast. Flipping, on the other hand, uses a set length of line and is controlled with your free hand. I find I pitch a whole lot more than I flip.

Thanx again guy's! I checked out utube and found what I'm looking for!
i really like the water skimming pitch where the lure skips across the surface!
Looks like a flying insect crashing!
Can any lure be made to skim the surface like mentioned?

cheers

Pretty much. All it takes is practice

Take a look at Kevin's fall fishing video. It's starts off with Kevin on a dock showing you the differences in and how to pitch and flip.

Personally, I Pitch. I don't flip. Why, because I just suck at it. Looks really simple but I'm just all thumbs so to speak. If it ever starts to warm up around here, I'm going to practice, practice, and practice some more my feeble attempts at learning this technique.

It's the top picture. You know you've got pitching down when you can drop your lure right where you want it time and time again, and without nearly a splash to spook the fish.

I also pitch spinnerbaits tight to cover or the shoreline, when a loop cast or my 3/4 arm cast would just be over kill.
