Hook removal

Posting this here for some of the newer fishermen. I can not take credit for finding this. A friend of mine posted this on another site after having a 6 1/2 lbs bass die after swallowing a 3 inch swim bait.

There is a time where you will end up with a deep hooked fish. You may find that your efforts to remove the hook through the mouth with out any success. This is a great example on how to go through the gills to get a hook out (to include drawings)
This is not a debate in Catch and Release but a tool you can use if you have a deep hooked fish you don't plan on keeping.

It works well some of the time. Sometimes there is nothing that can be done, but knowing the newest techniques in the proper handling of fish is a good thing.

We've been down this road before. It's worth a shot to try, but I've had mixed results. It's important for all of us to focus on the release part of catch and release. I've seen guys release fish they might has well kept because of shoddy hook removal.

C, it is definitely worth the post and has worked for me a couple times. People also need to take care with fish that are not deep hooked, time out of water, slimecoat, the way they are held etc...

can i have a proper technique to remove a hook from the eye. lol. not even joking, its happened a few times. kept the fish though. it was cats anyways

I have done the same thing weezymagic, actually hooked a nice fish in 40+ feet of water and all i ended up reeling in was an eyeball,but with the eyeball on the hook i caught over 5 fish in five minutes.

Look away and push it out!

Now whats really a trip is that 1/100,000 or so fish that you hook in the head that kills them dead on the spot. Its happened to me once of twice and I think its happened to zook too - you set the hook, its in the outside of the head, and the fish just floats in stone dead.

I have had the eye hook set kill them as well. I would agree to just pull it out. Not sure there is any better way. I did have a larger one where I was able to put through and cut the barb off.

Great post... have to try it.... when ever i couldnt get one out my friends would always say,"OH that fish is going to die" and i kept telling them it wouldnt. But about 2 months later i caught a fish and the hook was still in its throat and would rust out in the next few days. (we were fishing a pond)
