Friend's looking for a reel under 150, he likes daiwa?

So my friend's been wanting to buy a new reel. He used some of the lower end Daiwa's are likes them pretty good! He's looking to upgrade a bit, but is not gonna spend more than 150. I told him prolly a Tierra!

He fishes this lake in the summer, and it's a pretty shallow lake, and has lots of hydrilla matted in then, I told him a revo S becuase of this. But he wants a reel to make long casts so he can fish the hydrilla thoroughly since he fishes from shore. I told him citica, but he says since it made out of graphite, the heavy cover and braid will be tough on it. He's leaning toward The tierra, because it's a tierra.

So here's the run down.

He need a tough reel because of where and how he'll be fishing.
He needs a solid drag (ten pounds prolly nuf right?).
He's pretty much excluded the citica.
And last. He wants a good caster.

Citica will handle tough stuff easily. I can't count how many people I've saw on TV using Curado's (has graphite sideplates like the Citica) with 50lb - 65lb braid and pitching to mats of grass with jigs or fishing frogs. Matter of fact, saw one do it yesterday on TV on "Classic Patterns". The Citica doesn't have a titanium level-wind as you would preferably have (braid can eat up some level-winds) and since he is using braid I'd look elsewhere. Even though it should do fine with it...

The Revo S fits the bill better than the Tierra or Citica. It has a crazy-good amount of drag pressure at 24LB'S which would be great to have when fishing matted vegetation and slop, hydrilla, etc. As far as casting, if he's been using lower-end Daiwa's, the Revo S should out-cast them. They don't cast particularly far with lighter stuff, though...

Tierra would do great for all-around fishing. Probably do fine with braid and tough matted sloppy junk. Revo would really be better for mainly just heavy fishing, though...

But if he's liked his Daiwa's I'd say go with the Tierra.

Sorry, but you're friend doesn't know what he's talking about. The vast majority of reels have at least some graphite (normally the palm plate). I can pretty much guarantee you any of those three reels with have at least a graphite palm plate.

I've used my Citica for about a year with braid, and I've had not problems at all with the reel mechanically.

If he's going to be throwing like 3/8oz baits or heavier to the thick cover, any of the reels will be just fine, and he's over thinking it. If this is the case, tell him to get whichever one feels the best in his hand (on the rod he's going to use).

If he's planning on using lighter lures (like 1/4oz-ish) then I can't really recommend one over another since I've only casted the Citica.

I was looking around at TW, and saw the revo '09 SX for 138, and the Viento for 129! I'll definitely let him know about those. Also maybe a HSTA from Aqua, I think it's 130 from there, and according to the TT review, it's a good castser, even with lighter stuff! Not sure what kinda stuff he'll be throwing.

He'll be coming down from Al. next weekend (he lives there), and well, hit Tuppens and BPS sometime then. Well, check out the reels mentioned.

If you can get a HSTA for the same as the tierra get it. I own both and always grab the HSTA before the tierra.

I have the Tierra and absolutely love it. Its super smooth and casts like a dream. I got mine brand new from ebay for $116 shipped.
