Well, a pair of HDS-5's with the structure scan ducer, or a pair of 798's is going to cost around $1,800.

To start out with a single unit, the 798 will cost about $900, while the HDS-5 with structure scan will cost around $1,200.

UPDATE...

I just found out that Humminbird has made a trolling motor mount SI transducer. It looks great, and is not too much more than your standard 83/200 2D transducer.

The network module to connect fishfinder units so you can share GPS waypoints is basically the same for both manufacturers....about $125.

This just about settles the issue for me. Given Humminbird's far, far better customer service reputation, I'm going to start scoping out good deals on a 798, and find a decent humminbird GPS unit to put on the bow so I can network...and save my money for a big ol' 997 on the bow later. This should give me a very workable GPS/side-imaging setup for around $1500, cabling and mounting hardware included.

If you find any good deals let me know.....

Usually when I save up the money to get one something happens to the truck and I end up paying for repairs. The past two years its been a fuel pump and then two heads cracking...

Man, I am totally pinching pennies right now. Like Dave Ramsey says "rice and beans, beans and rice." I'm fixing to list a bunch of my old hot rod parts on craigslist too. Hopefully I'll get around $2500 for them. If I get a bunch extra, I'll go ahead and spring for a 997.

(Well, except for the ridiculous purchase I made the other night...it is shipping to me right now. If it turns out good, I'll share the info...if not, you never heard this haha.)

Maybe not he!! but somewhere unpleasant. Such as a desert with all your fishing equipment with no way of escape. (personally that is how I picture he!!)
