Default 2009 Top Fishing Brands

Found this online. It's the results of a survey by a company called Southwick Associations.

I couldn't find a newer one than 2009, but here it is:

"FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Southwick Associates’ AnglerSurvey.com announced the brands and products anglers preferred most in 2009. This list has been compiled from the 34,185 internet-based surveys completed by anglers who volunteered to participate last year in AnglerSurvey.com
In 2009, the top brands:

Top rod brand: Shakespeare Ugly Stik (16.4% of all purchases)

Top reel brand: Shimano (23.0% of all purchases)

Top rod and reel combo brand: Shakespeare (25.7% of all purchases)

Top fishing line producer: Pure Fishing’s Berkley line (Trilene, Fireline, Big
Game, Vanish) (42.6% of all purchases)

Top hard bait brand: Rapala (30.6% of all purchases)

Top soft bait brand: Zoom (16.8% of all purchases)

Top spinner bait brand: Strike King (16.6% of all purchases)

Top hook brand: Eagle Claw (34.5% of all purchases)

Top sinker brand: Bullet Weight (19.0% of all purchases)

Top fly rod brand: Sage (16.7% of all purchases)

Top fly reels brand: Orvis (11.1% of all purchases)

Top fly combo brand: St. Croix (18.0% of all purchases)

Top fly line brand: Scientific Angler (28.8% of all purchases)

Top fly brand: Orvis and Cabelas tied (11.0% of all purchases, each)

Top fly leader brand: Rio (28.4% of all purchases)

Top fly tying material brand: White River (60.5% of all purchases)

Top fish finder or sonar brand: Humminbird (42.9% of all purchases)

Top tackle box brand: Plano (55.8% of all purchases)

Top landing net brand: Frabill (20.2% of all purchases)

Top fishing knife brand: Rapala (22.6% of all purchases)

* 48% of all fishing tackle purchases involve terminal tackle (hooks, sinkers, swivels, etc.)
* Largemouth bass remain the number one targeted species of freshwater fish, with nearly 60% of fishing activity targeting largemouth bass.
* Saltwater anglers were more varied, with 25% of trips targeting any fish that bites, followed by striped bass (23%), flounder (21%), red drum (20%) and seatrout (20%). Please note these refer to species targeted on trips and not the number of fish actually caught."

Very interesting. I'll be keeping my eye out for the 2010 version.

I strongly suspect that the 2010 results would be very similar to 2009 and that the results from years prior to 2009 would be similar as well.

Obviously, it is misleading. The most purchased brands may not equal the most preferred. I also think it is more than a coincidence that most of those items can be found at walmart

I certainly don't fit the norm - until this year the only thing from the list I used regularly were the Plano boxes. Now I can add Humminbird, but all the other's I only use their products minimally.

I doubt many of us here fit the norm. We are probably on the "extreme" end of things. Plus, it didn't say "bass anglers," it just said "anglers."

You have to register but it looks like they have a survey every month. It's a pretty in depth survey.

Judging from the list of brand names, I'd also say the majority of fishing supplies were sold by Walmart. And in todays ecconomy with so many folks on a very tight budget, I can understand the purchases. We here in the forums by and large are serious bass fisherman/women. Therefore we specialize in our choices and tend to buy the best gear we can afford. But from what I see around these parts, most fisherman arn't really all that serious and are pretty much out fishing for whatever happens to hit their bait or lure. And they are looking to do that as cheeply as they can. They don't read up or study much about the fishing they do or don't do. My brother loves to fish but only gets out a few times a year, and he wouldn't know a pitchin rod from a brrom stick. I think most average anglers are in that boat.

As we know from this post, we all spend more on fishing tackle than the average angler. Taking this into consideration, I doesn't surprise me that most of us don't fish the "Top Tackle Brands of 2009"

Looking back at the 2007 survey, only a few things have changed. Most notable to me is Gamakatsu lost the top hooks spot and Lowrance lost the 2007 best electronic brand to Hummingbird in 2009.

I'd like to see a just bass fishing top brands survey. I don't think Ugly Stixs would be a top choice.

Agree with you guys. Some of the wiiners were obviously cost based purchases.
And some were almost no brainers, like Rapala & Plano

Years ago Ugly Stik ads ran on regular, national TV shows, the only fishing product I can recall being advertised to the general population.

As best as I can recall, they've been the best-selling rod for many, many years.

I'm having a good time listening to some of you get defensive LOL.

Yes, they are the "most preferred" items. There are many reasons to prefer one item over another. Price would definitely be one of the criteria upon which to base preference. This survey isn't misleading.

Face it...the average angler is a Wal-Mart kind of guy who uses an Ugly Stik. We (site members) are obviously not average, at least in our purchasing habits.

The biggest shock to me is the "largemouth bass targeted species" drop from 60% to 48%. To me, that would indicate a real need for more people to introduce our beloved bass to new people.

Maybe it means 12% less people I have to fight with to get to a spot?

Ditto! Most people here in MN think that walleye fishing is the only way to go. Other than converting my nephews, who come from a completely die-hard walleye fishing family, over to bass fishing, I'll let the rest of them just keep trolling their crawlers & leeches around on the bottom of the lake.

Ok, around here, no one talks about MN fishing without the mention of Musky. A week on LOTW musky fishing would be SWEET!
